Hello again!

I have a couple of questions concerning HD Video and the PC. I recently purchased a lovely flatscreen LCD TV that I have been using both as a TV and a display for my PC, since I do a lot of gaming and watch a lot of movies.

That having been said, I have noticed that while HD video clips look amazing, the picture quality isn't quite up to the HD standard. The TV is rated for 720p, not for full HD.

My questions are as follows:

thus far I have been using a DVI to VGA converter in order to hook my pc up to the TV. I have ordered a DVI to HDMI cable to replace it. Will my HD video look better if I am using this cable? Will it be true to the DVI standard or is the fact that it come sout of a DVI output going to harm the quality of the signal?

Will the TV be able to display HD video at 1080p resolution if I increase the desktop resolution? The native resolution is 1360x768.

Are HD video clips true to HD quality standards in general? Do blu-ray rips lose some of their HD properties?

thanks for your time guys!

If your TV is only rated to 720P then you can't get 1080 out of it.

Also with ripped clips...anything goes.

Fair enough, mjc, but is it possible to retain HD quality with a rip?

On that note, will I notice an improvement over VGA with the DVI to HDMI cable? Is it even possible to get a proper HD signal with a VGA cable?

Yes, but the ripper needs to be set for/support it and the file size is going to be pretty large...something close to 10GB for a two movie.

whoah! I suppose file size depends upon the codec... some have better compression than others. In any case, I recently purchased a DVI to HDMI converter cable, but when I used it to connect my pc to my TV the picture was AWFUL. Clearly this type of interface was not meant for the PC. I played with the Nvidia control panel and tried to make it work, but it just looked all pixelated and dark. It was lousy!

My main concern now with this lovely refurb TV that I bought is that it periodically turns itself on... I'm not entirely sure why it does that. It never turns itself off, though. Only on. On that note, from time to time the volume goes down by itself as though someone were holding the "volume down" button. I think the volume button is stuck. Any ideas on how I can get it to stop donig this stuff?

Call your local bishop?

It's possessed....

It turns it self on? That's a new one...

Is there any kind of regularity to when it does that?

Same witht the volume...any kind of regularity?

Any 'universal' remotes around that could possibly be the source?

What kind of remote does it use...IR or RF or a combo IR/RF?

I've seen some odd things happen with RF remotes...

Yes, the TV turns on when i'm not even home. According to my girlfriend the TV has done this while she was sleeping after I had left for work around 8 A.M. and it did so once while I was home around that time as well, so yes, there is some regularity there.

The volume doesn't seem to have a pattern; sometimes it does this just once and I wait a few minutes and it's fine, other times it does this and I turn the volume back up, then a few minutes later it turns the volume back down again.

It is possible that another remote could be interfering with the signal, but not close enough to my room, I would think, to make any difference. Although other wireless signals in the air may have something to do with it, nothing is being used when this happens. My wireless mouse is idle and my wireless networking card is disabled.

I am uncertain as to whether the remote is IR or RF... how can I determine this?

Actually, all of this on top of horrible light leakage is a bit too much to bear and I am strongly considering exchanging the thing.
