I had been using Filezilla for a couple of years. Occaisionally, when issues arose, we contacted the ISP, it usually boiled down to changes made on their end, they would give us the changes and things would work fine. Recently, no matter what i do, I cannot get Filezilla working. After thorough testsing from server end, the site can be connected to. However, not on my end. It was suggested it was a router or firewall issue. I dl SmartFTP, and for some reason, it works, but this is only a trial version. Do you think it's possible to get Filezilla going. I have tried checking all the settings. Any suggestions?
Download the latest version of Filezilla. Completely uninstall the version you are currently using, including removing any/all configuration files (it should be an .xml file in the Filezilla folder). Reboot and then install the latest version.

I did that but it still doesnt work.
Try the 'portable' version run from a CD (can't save any config info if run from CD) or a USB stick...

I think it has something to do with my settings, but i think i have them correct. I just ran the firewall and router configuration wizard and these was the last 2 lines "Response: 502 Port mismatch. Tainted by router or firewall.
PORT command tainted by router or firewall.
Connection closed. Why would this be a problem when running filezilla but not with smartftp?
Anyways, i'll try the above suggestion in the meantime. Thanks, mjc

darn, i tried the portable version same thing happened, it shows :
Connected
Status: Retrieving directory listing...
Command: PWD
Response: 257 "/" is the current directory
Command: TYPE I
Response: 200 Type set to I
Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode
Command: LIST
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing
Ok...in the Settings (Edit -> Settings) what is shown for the timeout?
Proxy?
Ident Server?

ok....timeout 20 seconds
proxy ...ftp proxy none
ident server - where do i get this info from? (in message response i saw "proFTPD", could that be it?
The Ident server settings should be under "Connection". Not all ftp sites need Ident, but some do, so enable 'for connection only' and 'accept requests from same IP' The user ID isn't absolutely necessary (yeah kind of sounds stupid not to actually ID anything...but the fact that the IDENT server is available is usually enough).
Also go back into the timeout setting and bump it up to 30 seconds.

Under my Settings tab: i have:
Connection - FTP, SFTP, generic proxy
- Transfers
- Interface
- Language
- editing
- update check
- logging
- debugging
So i'm not sure where to find ident setting cause when i check those out, there isn't anything

By the way, i've always been curious, (off topic) under my name, it says "geek adept". Who adds that, and what do the diff names mean? I remember it used to say something else.

It is automatically added by the forum software and changes according to the number of posts made.
I'll have to grab a newer version of Filezilla and give it a spin...they may have dropped the config option.

It is automatically added by the forum software and changes according to the number of posts made.It changes each time your posts double. Next change for you would thus be 16. There's a point at which your geekiness can also be customised by you.

Are filezilla and smartftp using the same ports?
Does it work without the router if connected directly or when all software firewalls (including the windows firewall (http://forum.filezilla-project.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4609)) have been disabled behind the router?

The wizard is included in Filezilla software. I checked the settings for SmartFTP and it said " System UNIX Port 113", Port Range 1024-5000. I believe filezilla uses port 21. I contacted DLink support to check my router settings, and they seem to be ok. That would make sense to me because Smart FTP would be using the same router to connect.

I'm having the same issue with Filezilla. I used it without problem for 6 months but now can not connect to my website. Please advise if you figured it out and what you did to correct it. Thanks!!!
