Hello, I'm new to this forum and I don't really know what type of information you may need to help me. If you could please help me though that would be great.

MY USB ports won't detect any new plug ins (e.g. printer, flash drive, ipod, etc.) but at the same time they turn on the cooling fans because when I check my System in Process Explorer, I see that my USB ports are using up 50% capacity at all times.

For the time being, I suspend their actions to keep my system from overworking but I would like to be able to use my ports again and not have to do this every time I boot up. Help please??? It's so frustrating!

What version of Windows are you running?

Make/model of computer...

Hello,

I am running Windows XP home edition

I was having problems with slow throughput, usb1.0 speeds, when my usb ports did recognize devices. Sometimes they just wouldn't recognize anything I plugged into them, and sometimes the cpu usage would run high when accessing certain devices then stay there.

I looked at all the configuration stuff and couldn't find anything that seemed unusual. When I was completely out of ideas I opened up the computer with the intention of checking the front panel connections to my motherboard.

A long-haired cat and a dusty house had resulted in a very dirty inside of my machine. I went to work cleaning everything up with a can of air and was pleasantly suprised when my system began working like it was supposed to.

Not sure if this was just a coincidence, but it made me pretty happy. Incidently I am running Ubuntu, so YMMV.

Still need the make/model info...

General cleaning can help solve a lot of problems, but if the machine in question happens to be a laptop...

Hey sorry, mjc not sure what you mean by model and make..

The problem is with my pc not laptop. Actually.. my motherboard on my laptop just crashed and I recently had to extract the hard drive as well.. just not lucky these days. I have an Hp media center.

I've ran a couple of scans using registry mechanic and even though I've cleaned up quite a bit.. it hasn't affected it.

Ps. Thanks for the advice pangea33 but I've tried that as well and it hasn't worked. Glad that it worked for you.

Make/model...who made the computer and what model is it...but you've just stated the relevant part...it's a desktop not a laptop.

Registry cleaning is something that is best left as a last resort...definitely not something to be routinely done, especially on an NT based OS, like Win2000 or newer.

Reboot, into Safe Mode. Open Device Manager (right click on the My Computer icon, select Properties). Under the View drop down menu (top toolbar), select "Show Hidden Devices". Go down to the USB section and remove everything. Reboot and watch for any error messages when the drivers are being reinstalled.

hey mjc,

for some reason I cannot boot in safe mode. It starts to boot and then it freezes on the black load up screen.. as well, the computer fan starts running again. I think it might have to do with the USB. Any suggestions?

Thanks again for all your help

Are all USB devices unplugged when trying to boot into Safe Mode?

Also, Safe Mode can extend the boot time by several minutes....

If you leave your USB in while your PC boots, in some models, it will try to boot from the thumb drive lol

Remember F8 for safe mode

hey guys...

yeah there is nothing plugged into the USB at all.. it still doesn't boot. :(

How long have you let it sit before giving up on it?

It is very odd that it will boot into Normal mode and not Safe Mode...very odd.

hey guys,

actually it doesn't boot at all. I select safe mode and press enter. Then it goes to another black screen with words scrolling up (which I believe is scanning). but then the words stop scrolling and it stays at the black screen with directory paths on it.

I've waited half an hour before giving up and pulling the plug.. and I tried it 2 times.

It isn't 'scanning' anything...those things you see scrolling by are all the drivers being loaded. That is what the XP splash screen and the little blue-eyed Cylon are hiding...

Now where exactly does it stop...what driver is it hanging on? (be exact)

mssnguyen

Steps I took...
F8
Safe Mode
Windows XP Media Center Edition

...Screen starts to scroll driver addresses...

Last line before freeze: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32\Drivers\MUP.sys

At the bottom of the screen it flashed:
Press ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys

Fan turns on

This time it actually loads! I was in safe mode 20 minutes ago. I took the steps you recommended (uninstall/disable USB hubs). The prompts appear and so I clicked OK and it freezes every time. This is getting ridiculous.

This is beginning to look like there is a physical problem with the USB.

At this point, you need to try something other than Windows...I'd suggest Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.com/). You will need to download the ISO and burn it to a disk with a program capable of burning ISOs...most full featured burning apps have a 'burn image' setting, that is what you'd use.

The disk is a self contained, bootable, operating system that isn't Windows. It runs from the CD and doesn't touch anything on the hard drive...so it is safe to run without affecting Windows.

Here's a Knoppix 5.1.1 ISO file (ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/dist/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso).
