Hi-
I am a first time user of this site but have looked at your threads before for help, so excuse my lack of technical knowledge.
I have an Acer Aspire 9410 notebook with windows XP. I do a lot of picture disk burning and music burning, so I bought Roxio easy media creator 10 suite and installed it. This cause regular errors on my start up menu so I uninstalled it. Then my laptop did not recognize my cd driver. I finally figured out how to get that to work and according to the device manager area (properties, etc) it is now working properly. I can rip music and view anything on a cd that I put in but now I cannot copy pictures (I haven't tried music yet) to a blank cd. The error message says "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." Since I was always able to do that before I had Roxio I should be able to do that now. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem without hiring a pro?
Thanks!

CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529/).
This was got from here:
Drive:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function. (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315350)

Thank you for the link, it did solve most of the problem. Now my computer recognizes the drive, and says it's functioning normally. However, it does not recognize a blank CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD. The interesting part is that when I use the burning program that came loaded on the computer (and I hate using that program) as opposed to the windows burning program pictures are burned onto a CD. So that makes me think that there is still something somewhere that is messed up, but I haven't found any information on how to fix it. Has anyone had this type of issue after removing Roxio?
Has anyone had this type of issue after removing Roxio?
Yes, it seems to be a fairly common problem after removing certain 'burning apps'...*cough* *cough*.
Open the Search box and search for *aspi.* (type that in, exactly...the * is a wildcard and will bring up all files with aspi as part of their name). Report back what they are and where they are located.

Thanks!!!!
Do you use either the NTI CD Maker or the GEAR stuff?
It looks like you have no general ASPI layer on this machine...but rather one tied specifically to those two programs. Roxio probably was also installing/using its own ASPI layer and the interaction of all that and the removal Roxio has left you with a totally borked ASPI layer.
Grab aspi_you (http://www.nu2.nu/download.php?sFile=aspiyou15.zip) and give it a run...it should tell you if my suspicions are correct...
It will probably come back indicating ASPI trouble...so you will need to grab a working ASPI layer. There are several ways of going about it, so report back the results of that scan and we'll go from there.

I dislike the NTI program, it is clumsy for my most often used applications. I have no idea what the Gear thing is, I have never noticed it before. If the ASPIlayer is tied to those specific programs, then how was the windows copy to disk working before? Was it using one of them? Just for fun: what is an ASPI layer?
This is the results of the scan:
Errorlevel returned:
--------------------------------------
255 Failed to load ASPI32 library
254 Failed to get ASPI32 functions
253 No host adapters found
0 Success
Does this confirm your borking? :)
Thanks again for your time!
Yeap...its gone.
The term "ASPI" stands for Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. It’s a universal driver layer that operates in between software and the CD-R hardware. It is often referred as 'ASPI layer', ‘
There probably was a 'standard' ASPI layer in place before the Roxio install, but Roxio installs its own and it looks like it was replaced when it was uninstalled. Also, with XP there is no 'system' ASPI to begin with, but once third party apps to handle burning are installed and removed, it tends to need one.
You can use the Adaptec version as a 'generic' ASPI layer.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm
The GEAR looks like it is part of the package of installed software from when you bought the machine...probably to be used to create the install disks.

I ran everything and the aspichk run showed "Error: ASPI is not properly installed" so then I ran aspiinst (but from what I read they do not work on XP) and now the aspichk says under components: ASPI32.SYS, WOWPOAT.EXE, WINASPI.DLL, and WNASO32.DLL are properly installed and fully operational. But I still can't burn a disk using windows. Is there something I should do differently for XP? I am really starting to have a hateful feeling for Roxio.
In the Run box type services.msc and see if the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service has been disabled. Turn it on if it has...

Use these instructions to check the registry for upper & lower filter settings and remove if present. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us)
Before doing so export the contents of the key to a REG file and put that file somewhere handy; you can "Merge" it to restore the key to its former state if necessary.

Hello-
The IMAPI service was set to manual, and I changed it to automatic. I also told it to re-start service if it is disabled. Then I re-started the computer but blank disks are still not recognized.
The upper/lower thing is something that I tried originally when I went looking for help on the microsoft site. (Because originally the an error code of 39 was seen at some point but I do forget when.) Should I do it again? The other thing I did was save a new check point (?) now that I have most of the functions back so I could restore if I really messed something up while trying to fix the CD problem. I have also rechecked the NTI program, stuff still burned there.
Also, check under the Recording tab on the drive's properties page to make sure that recording is actually enabled. Otherwise it won't automatically start the service.
The check the registry key listed in this KB article to make sure your drive is correctly set to the proper type...

Those are things I have done too, but let me ask you: when I went into the registry before there was a point when the choice was 1 for CD-R or 2 for CD-RW (or something like that) according to that article. My computer was set at 3 already, and I tried to find out what "3" refered to but could not so I chose 2. (Then of course I checked to see if burning would occur to a CD-RW; no dice.) At the time I was wondering if 3 had anything to do with a CD/DVD as opposed to a CD-R or CD-RW only.
Sylvander
10-10-2008, 03:34 AM
On the [twice] linked web page it says:
"The drive type value of 3 indicates that the drive is a standard CD-ROM and is not writable".
"Should I do it again?"
YES.
phoenixkb
10-10-2008, 01:53 PM
Sorry! I didn't see the "3" explaination because I don't have a second drive so I didn't read it that far (I had tried to look it up on the internet).
As to doing it again, when I went in there it still says 2, so that should be working properly? On a possibly different note, I am now getting two new error messages.
1) A runtime error has occurred. Do you wish to debug? Line 21 Error: Object expected
2) A runtime.....(same) Line 2858 Error: Unterminated comment
Runtme errors are connected to specific programs...what program is running when the error shows up?
phoenixkb
10-10-2008, 02:28 PM
They occur during start up. One of the reasons why I removed Roxio (just one of the many) is that there was an error connected to Roxio during the start up. I know that there is a lot of junk that shouldn't be pinned to my start up menu that is, and I have looked at the list before but I am never sure of what I am looking at (with the exception of a few things that obiviously didn't need to be there so I unchecked them. That was a while ago but maybe I unchecked something that shouldn't have been unchecked.)
Well, I guess it is time for a HijackThis log...instructions here (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=60009).

There is a bunch of stuff in there that isn't needed, a couple of things that, while not particularly harmful send private data out and some other stuff...I don't have time to do a complete run through right now, but I should later this evening.

Hello-
So I am still unable to get windows to recognize a blank cd. I was looking around in the computer management area and I clicked on storage. The error message was "the service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. This snapin's display may be inconsistant with the removable storage service. If the problem persists please restart the snapin." Also, the removable storage tab has an x through it. Could either of these things have anything to do with the problem?

Thanks for your help but I ended up taking the computer back to it's factory settings instead. Now everything works again!
I've been scratching my head over this the past couple of days...I ran out of ideas and was about to suggest repair install/reinstall to you, anyway.

I have a friend that says I should do that anyway once a year, do you agree? When I reinstalled stuff, I left out a bunch (so now I have more free space!) and I put in spybot, avg, and adaware. Will those things keep down the problems I was having before with start up menus and other computer slowing things? Also, (and I swear this is my last question ;) ) spybot keeps telling me that there is an attempted change to the registry and do I approve or deny the change. Since I don't often know why this happens or what the changes mean I have been saying no (if it's not because I just installed something). Are changes without installations normal and I should be saying yes?
Note to all: I had a really good experience with Acer's "empowering technology"tool to return the computer to it's factory setting.
Adaware isn't what it used to be...it kind of fallen from favor (long story, that I don't have all the details of...)
AVG has become somewhat bloated in its latest incarnation...still a decent AV, but 'too big'...Avast is 'trim and lean'.
Spybot is still OK, but that resident protection can get to be very annoying. There should be a log file or a 'more details' type thing to find out exactly what change it is trying to prevent. Certain, non-install related changes are normal...and not all are bad/nefarious, but without knowing what it is, it is really hard to say whether or not you should allow it.
