Does anyone on this forum has a presario C770us and if you do how do you get the volume up on this thing? My Dad just got one for his birthday and we have the volume up at 100% and can hardly hear the sound coming out of it, unless it is about 2:00am when everything is quiet. Do I need new drivers or something? Or there is some kind of trick I am not aware of. The computer is only a couple of months old.
Thanks

Do your speakers have a built-in amplifier?
And how well do they work on any other input source?
And are they connected to the line-out or loudspeaker connection on the PC?
You can't expect to connect un-amplified speakers to line-out and get adequate volume.
Have you tried connecting them to the headphone socket on an optical drive and playing a music CD?

No, to all. I am trying to listen to what is coming out of the laptop speakers, and with the volume at peak I can hardly hear anything I know it should sound much louder. I have a HP laptop and a Toshiba and both laptop, if I turn to volume up you could stay down the street or a block away and hear what is coming out of these two laptops. I am really disappointed with the sound system from this laptop. Perhaps I should get him a set of earphones and what makes it worse, he uses hearing aids. So if I can hardly hear the sounds coming out, there is not way he is going to hear anything. Sylvander, thanks for your reply.

Try some amplified speakers connected to the line-out socket and see what you get. :)

Thanks for the reply. Will do. I will see if ratshack has something inexpensive. If not I will see if my Dad want to get rid of the notebook and get one like I have. I feel very bad because I was the one who got the computer for him.
Thanks again.

Thanks again Sylvander, I will try to get something on Saturday and try it.
If it is new, I'd quit messing around with it an use the warranty...

Yes! it is new. Just bought it the third week in August from Micro Center.
Use the warranty. Laptops should have enough volume to be heard, their built in speakers are often small 2 Ohm 'headphones in a box' that don't need much power or are powered...

It is not that you can't hear it, It's a lot lower volume than I've on any other computer, and I have to volume at 100%. I think it is a problem with this model. I googled the model and found that a few people are having the same problem, that is why I did not call Micro Center to complaint. I just thought that there could be a updated audio driver for it or something. That is also why I asked if anyone on this forum had one of these computer by accident, perhaps I could have gotten some kind of feedback from them.
Thanks for the help, mjc.
If it seems to be a common problem with that model, then call Compaq directly...they may have a hotfix that isn't available through normal channels...
In any case, though this is warranty issue.

I think that is what I will do. However, I thing Compaq now belongs to HP, if I am not mistaking, so I will get a number and call them on Monday, see what happens.
Thanks mjc.

Just to follow-up, I contacted compaq/hp and the answered back sending me a couple of links to download audio driver and bios update and I did. After installing the new drivers and bios update, the sound did get a tadbit better but still nothing in comparison to my HP and Toshiba laptop. They said if that did not do it, they would send me shipping box for me to send the computer to them. I will ask my Dad if he is satisfied with the sound coming from the laptop or send it back to them.
Good deal...if it isn't up to a reasonable level, without having the volume slider at max, then definitely send it back.

mjc, after communicating with HP about this notbook they asked me to do a couple of things, like update the BIOS and download from there support site the new drivers for the sound. I did and it did not do much if anything. So they sent me a shipping box via fedex and I sent the computer to them. I don't know what they did aside from load windows vista again, because I have to do all the settings again, but the sound is still the same. I guess that is the way this particular notebook is. Now if I had to recomend to anyone this model notebook, just because of the audio, I don't think I would. Aside from the audio, it is not a bad notebook. So I will go to plan B. (Buy an amplified set of speakers) I am just about out of options. My Dad love music but he will not be listining to music on this notebook.

 Ugh, I have the same laptop. Did anyone find out any good news about this laptop? Heck, at this point, I'd be happy with a phone number. I'm eating a granola bar and it's louder than my silly little laptop.
Much Thanks!!!

I sent the one we got for my Dad back to HP and they did some work on it, not sure what they did. I know they reinstalled windows xp. Sound is a little better, no where close to the volume I have on my HP or on the Toshiba.

From hp on that notebook
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista.
Understanding why notebook PCs with Conexant audio may display audio issues after installing Windows Vista SP1
Certain notebook PCs with Conexant audio driver versions earlier than 4.33.x.xx may exhibit the following symptoms after installing Windows Vista SP1:
Audio is disabled or does not function.
A Windows Found New Hardware message displays.
A blue screen error may occur when reinstalling the audio driver from Recovery Manager, Windows Update or from a softpaq.
To resolve these issues, it is necessary to install the latest BIOS and the proper audio driver. If an HP factory image is installed on the computer, run:
HP Health Check
Online diagnostic HP Instant Support Professional Edition (ISPE)
However, an HP factory image is not installed on the computer:
Run the Microsoft windows update.
Manually install the HP audio driver.
