Hello, hope Im posting this in the right part of the forums, but here goes. Ive got 2 yellow exclaimaion marks in device manager, under system devices/pci device (pci device listed twice, both with yellow "!" marks). this is a new build, motherboard is Gigabyte ep35c. Ive gone through all the driver disks I have, but cant seem to nail those 2 exclaimation marks, and have turned off "shell hardware detection" in services as the "wizard" on boot/reboot is so annoying. any help appreciated,or any more info needed gladly supplied, Techdunce:)

1. Go into Device Manager; click "View->Devices by Connection"; highlight the top device in the hierarchy; [then provided this isn't a laptop (they don't have the necessary keys)] blip both the Numlock and * keys together, then Numlock again [to turn it back on].
This will make the device tree completely expand in one go.
2. Now look down the expanded PCI Bus sub-branch of the device tree.
Still see the 2 yellow exclamation marks?
Does this way of displaying the devices give you a better idea of which devices have the driver problem, and where they fit within the device hierarchy?
Are the devices given any better identification?
Does the "Properties->Device Status" explain the nature of the problem?
Could you post the information here?
A screenshot or two?
Here are 3 screenshots of the upper portions of my own PC's PCI Bus sub-branch.

Hello Sylvander, thanks for getting back to me. I tried your advise, but the numlock * thing left me lost, but did try a driver rollback on one of the exccaimation marks, and that seemed to work, although had tried previously with no luck so, tried the other one also, both those exclaimation marks are gone, but substituted for another under sound, audio and game controllers/audio device on high definition audio bus. Have tried with all the disks I have to reinstall this, but nothing seems to work. I did get to point where windows asked for "hdaudbus.sys", it wasnt in "driverrollback" but I pointed to c:\windows\system32\drivers\hdaudbus.sys, that went well, til reboot, still have exclaimation mark on "sound, audio and game controllers/audio device on high definition audio bus:( I seem to be going round in circles here:confused: Thanks again, Techdunce:)

The Numlock and * thingy...
Is a Windows thing.
It can be used to quickly [in one swift whoosh]...
Expand a branch or a whole tree...
Of either a folder system [in Windows Explorer]...
Or a device system [in Device Manager].
You can expand a branch manually one item at a time, but it takes MUCH LONGER, and much more effort...
Than doing it the quick way.
Those exclamation marks mean that there ARE drivers installed for the problem items...
But all is not well with those...
There is some kind of problem.
It would help to know what Windows is reporting regarding the nature of the problem in "Properties->Device Status", but you're not telling so far.
You probably need to "Update Driver" for the problem device[s], and provide the correct driver.
The resulting Driver Wizard would need to be pointed at the files for the driver, in particular the INF file, which files' content identifies the device for which the driver files are suited, and tells the wizard what to do.

Hello again Sylvander, I got the shortcut (numlock *) thingy just after I last posted:) When I go into properties I see a code1 this device is not configured properly. When I click update driver or reinstall driver nothing happens, I expect to see a wizard, but nothing shows up, have restarted the shell hardware detection service in services. Would go to control panel/add new hardware but dont know what or where the problem driver is "audio on high definition audio bus"? Want to thank you again to sticking with this, Techdunce:)

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123)
Cause
The device has no drivers installed on your computer, or the drivers are configured incorrectly.
Recommended resolution
Update the driver
You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.
In the device properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver. If updating the driver does not work, see your hardware documentation for more information.
"audio on high definition audio bus"
This generic driver probably the wrong one, and you need the OEM [Original Equipment Manufacturer] driver.
Is it onboard sound or a soundcard?
Do you have a driver CD that came with the PC?

I just finished building this a few of days ago, the mobo is Gigabyte ep35c, with sound support onboard, so am assuming the mobo drivers cd would be the place to start, will post back with results of that, or for any other suggestions, thanks again, Techdunce:)

Well, the only thing sound related I can find on the mobo cd is the Realthek audio driver, when I click on install I get a driver fail notice, nothing else to report on that, no code or text to reference:( wish I had more to go on with that, thanks again,Techdunce:)
Download the latest drivers from Gigabyte...don't use the ones on the disk. Grab all the drivers while there and install them...
Also make sure you have the latest for your video card.
Then install them, chipset, first, video, sound, network, others...

Thanks for that, downloading from gigabyte is taking lots of time, so will let you know how it goes when done, but one question in the meantime, this is the driver page for my mobo,
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2740
having real trouble knowing which sata driver, lan driver or audiio driver is the right one? Techdunce:)
Well, what flavor of Windows? There is one LAN driver for XP and one for Vista...
Not sure about the SATA drivers...but the Intel 'everything' package will work. The two smaller downloads under the 'large' package ore for the floppy disk to load the SATA drivers during install, if needed.
Audio...the Realtek driver.

Yep, its the sata thats giving me a headache lol, Im guessing by the "intel everything" you mean the top 25MB download. While on the subject, the files Im downloading are slow, I mean real slow, 2kb/s 5kb/s etc, so, let you know how things go, when downloads are sorted, thanks again,Techdunce:)
Yeah, Gigabyte's site can be like that...and they don't have many mirrors to choose from.

Still trying to download drivers, extremely slow, but will definitely post back with results, Techdunce:)

Well, seems like I just cant win on this one, after downloading drivers from gigabyte, I get this error message installing audio driver
"Some installation files are corrupt, please download a fresh copy and try again"
Been at this a while now, and kinda all it, at least for now,any ideas welcome, and thanks for your efforts so far,Techdunce:)

Ok, been messing about with this thing all day, and Im kinda back to square 1, but, when I click on "driver details" in the properties of "audio on high definition audio bus" (which still has a yellow "!") I get a popup saying "no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device", does this message mean anything to the better informed here, thanks again,Techdunce:)

1. "no driver files...have been loaded for this device"
Some kind of problem with the driver files...
Conflict with another driver perhaps...
Or the driver isn't perfectly suited to the job.
The driver wizard installs the best driver it can find [2nd or 3rd best; not a perfect match], if it cannot find the perfect driver.
Install Unknown Device Identifier (http://www.zhangduo.com/unknowndeviceidentifier.html), and use it to identify the exact device with a detailed description [might be rather difficult, but do your best], and then use UDI to find the precisely correct driver.
The sound driver listed by UDI might well be rather different to the device as described within Device Manager.
Using my own system to illustrate:
e.g. Below...
Screenshot 1 shows the minimal info given by Device Manager...
Screenshot 2 shows [some of] the greater detail given by UDI.
Screenshot 3 shows how to find the driver.

Hello, apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Unkown device identifier doesnt work, tried several times downloading uninstalling reinstalling, just doesnt work, actually locked up my system a couple of times. Device manager isnt reporting a "unidentified device" its just saying there is no driver installed for the device, no yellow question mark, just a yellow "!" exclaimation mark "code 28" but in any case, unkown device identifier is no help, does "code 28" throw any light on the subject. Thanks again for the efforts youve put in on this, will try the download again (cant hurt, right)Techdunce:)

1. "Unknown device identifier doesn't work"
Hmm, I've never had any trouble getting it to work.
Which Windows version are you running?
2. "Device manager isnt reporting a "unidentified device" its just saying there is no driver installed for the device, no yellow question mark, just a yellow "!" exclaimation mark "code 28""
Even so, UDI would give you an independent identification based on what the hardware is reporting about itself rather than what driver is installed [probably incorrect] at present and what info is therefore in the registry [therefore also probably not quite correct].
3. "does "code 28" throw any light on the subject"
See The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123)
Same as before; the problem device[s] need to be identified, and the correct drivers found and "Update Driver" used to replace/install.

Hello again. Using XP pro
When I downloaded UDI, and ran the installer, all goes normal, I double click the desktop icon, nothing happens, it just highlights the icon:( ,so, I go to device manager and right click the device in question, I know nothing about this program and was hoping to see something in the context menu, nothing there, and the html link it puts on the desktop works occasionally:(
I got the original drivers off the cd`s that came with the motherboard, as suggested earlier, I did download new ones from gigabyte, but, after about (honestly) 3 and half hours of downloading, they didnt work. At this point I really must say a big thankyou, to you all, its always reassuring when total strangers give their time and efforts to other total strangers, Techdunce:)

1. "I double click the desktop icon, nothing happens"
When I run version 5.02 [C:\Program Files\Unknown Device Identifier v5,02\UnknownDeviceIdentifier.exe][screenshot 1] that's installed on my Win2000Pro system...
A narrow horizontal window appears on screen with a smiley tiger head jumping left and right to indicate activity. [screenshot 2]
When that scan of the hardware is complete [takes about 9 seconds], a large window appears displaying a long list of all detected hardware. [screenshot 3]
Can't think why it wouldn't work with your XP OS; the download page says XP is a supported OS.
2. "the html link it puts on the desktop works occasionally"
HTML! Huh? It aught to be a shortcut to the EXE file.
Try the link on the Start menu, or else go direct to the EXE file and "Open" that.
The "Properties" of any link to the EXE file should tell you the location/address of the EXE file.

I just want to clear the link issue up, it puts 2 links/shortcuts on my desktop(am using the link provided above) one is a shortcut to open the program, but does nothing, and the second is a html link, to buy something or other, Im not making this up, will try again but am a bit wary of this software, all things considered, thanks again,Techdunce:)

The version on the link posted is 6.01, and yet again it doesnt work or do anything for me, regardless of double clicking on the shortcut or exe. file in program files, also dont like the html link that I didnt ask for, is there such a thing as buyware? in any case, spending lots of time on a dead end with this program, I could only wish to see a nodding tiger head like you describe:) :D any other ideas, thanks again for taking the trouble and sticking with this,Techdunce:)

Ok, opted to google for the ver. you mention in your post 5.02, and that works fine, but just in case you thought I was winding you up Im posting this link

now, cant seem to find the "audio device on high definition audio bus", typical istn it lol, but what an excellent little program, love it already. Using windows system information, under software enviorenment/system drivers/status, I cant find any problems, this is getting more and more confusing:confused: :) Im thinking Im never going to get to the bottom of the "yellow exclaimation mark". Thanks for all your help, Techdunce:)

1. "cant seem to find the "audio device on high definition audio bus""
That's kind of to be expected.
I expect the installed driver INF file includes that description of the "Device", so that's what is included in the registry settings [when that (incorrect) driver is installed], and then retrieved from the registry and displayed in Device Manager as the device description.
Whereas the UDI retrieves the correct device description from the ROM included in the hardware, and displays that.
So what you need to do to find the true description that applies to the problem device...
Is to compare [scan quickly with the eyes and mind?]:
One device at a time:
[That's why it's so helpful to expand all of the device tree after displaying "By Connection"]
A) The device description shown in Device Manager...
With...
B) The device description shown in UDI.
Where there is no disagreement all is well.
What you should be hoping to find is:
A PCI device that...
C) Is sound related.
D) Has a differing description to the problem item in Device Manager, and yet you think may well be the same item.

Ok, I think I/We may be getting somewhere now. IN view by connection, the exclaimation mark is under microsoft uaa bus driver for high definition audio, so am downloading that driver as I type, will make a drive image when done(again, very slow download) and give it a go, hope to post good news soon, Techdunce:)

Wow, its been a while, and I hated not replying after receiving so much input from people here trying to help, but the fact was, I didnt have anything to post, til now:D , found this post while intermittently returning to this maddening issue.
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=162648&mode=linear
I now see my problem was, not uninstalling all related drivers/firmware, after reading "Musksnipe`s" instructions, uninstalled the relevant drivers in device manager, and add/remove, also the registry key mentioned,(still not sure if that was necassary, but did it anyway, had made a drive image first, just to stay on the safe side) then reinstalled Microsoft UAA and Realtek drivers. I really wanted to post a happy ending to this issue, and google seems to indicate its quite a common, and frustrating issue:mad: , so, a very big THANKYOU for all your help, maybe this fix might help someone else, all the best, Techdunce:)
