Well I finally put Paveroti's type of music on - Opera. A few questions about setting up best way over the next couple of days, so everybody hide http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
At the moment I was wondering if anybody knew how to save (export) my address book in Hotmail as well as e-mails sitting there as I want to close my Hotmail down (20-30 spams a day minimum). Can't print mails out as some of them have attachments on them and would prefer to save to disk along with my address book if it is possible.
As a side note. Just used Opera to check my hotmail and a total of 23 coookies attempted to install. I had to let some through before I could access my HM account. Why so many cookies? How many of them send (or try to) info back to MS. The info in one of them said something about TRACKER, so yes they do gather and return info.

Ernie,
Probably one of the easiest ways to get what you want to save from your Hotmail account would be just to forward it to whatever email account you are going to use with Opera.
As for the address book.....don't know, never used Hotmail...

As far as I know you have to manually copy & paste each address. Hotmail, like most MS products, aren't too keen on you moving on to a competitor...
Like most PCs, mine has Outlook Express which allows me to connect to a Hotmail account. I use Outlook as my main email program. After downloading my account to OE, I created new folders under the OE Inbox. Then, using Outlook I was able to import all of the messages - then deleted them from Outlook Express, otherwise if you import OE again you'll get duplicates of everything already imported.
No ideas for other configurations except for what mjc said, forward message each to your new address. I had to do that with another account, it's a little messy because they appear to all come from me until I open them.

BTW, I have my browser (IE 5.5) set to prompt for cookies. I almost never have a request from Hotmail. I wonder if Opera is doing that, are you using the "Free" version?

Thanks Guys
Guess I will have to do it the hard way after all.

If you check your cookies and temp Internet files you will find all the cookies there for HM. Unless you have lots of time to spare don't even try counting them. Majority of then come from HM. I have Opera set up (at the moment) to show all cookies, that's why I was able to count them. Also its great not to have adverts in Opera.

I use a Hotmail account and got sick of the spam so I went to the exclusive filter. That means that any email from a person that is not in your mail box is thrown out. Great for getting rid of the spam, not so good for cousin jim that tries to email me out of nowere and others that want to email me without being in my address book. You can set the custom filters to filter a certain type of message into your inbox. For example, everything with the word "question" in the subject line is filtered into my inbox so that "re: question to ebay seller" allways gets through.
I like using Hotmail. M$ does the virus scans for me. I have never had a problem with it.

I regularly "save" my Hotmail addresses by clicking on Address Book in Hotmail and copying/pasting to a New Message or into WordPad..and then I print it up or save to floppy, or both (I am a bit obsessive!) Takes a couple of "tries", but just swish with your mouse across top of list until it begins to "turn blue" and then hold the Shift key down, and mouse click at bottom of list. Copy/paste..and voila. You'll probably still have to copy/paste each one individually into "new" Address list wherever you go, but at least you'll not have to transfer each one from Hotmail to wherever.
I too like Hotmail. The occasional pop up is aggravating, but I don't get much in the way of junk mail, and I like the McAfee..since I am running AVG, is like a double set of protection.

Hi thanks for the input.
I forward all the mail that \i wanted to keep to my OExp and will put to floppy from there. E-mail address I have (as you said KAy) cut and pasted into word, will get RSI putting them into my OExp address book http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Since signing up with Eudora 3 months ago I have never had any spam there. So that is where I will be using web mail from in the future.

Make sure you have your Hotmail account(s) setup in OE then open your Address Book in OE and from Tools select "Synchronise Now" and click on the Hotmail AC(s) that you wish to synchronise. This feature was down for a while a few months back but was up and running at the last count.

Thanks all fixed now.

I did it the hard way, cut and pasted individually all addresses and forwarded all kept mails individually. Did not want HM associated with OE because of the quantity of spam coming in.

HeHe - Did you just burst into song and sing "I did it my way"!! LOL http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I see that you (like Kay) don't like setting up hotmail in OE. I've never had problems (apart from getting rid of MSN messenger etc) but maybe I'm missing something or I'm just not paranoid enough! Which is it? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
It's so easy to setup and use a hotmail a/c in OE that one can do it on a temporary basis and when finished just delete the a/c and its folders. I don't see how there could be cross-over of a/c information so that span became redirected to the non-hotmail addy(s). To keep the hotmail a/c "dormant" within OE just uncheck "Include this account when receiving mail or synchronising".
Even though I get ridiculous amounts of spam on hotmail this has never "infected" my POP3mail a/c and the only spam that has appeared on the POP3mail has been picked up from my website. That was dealt with by immediately changing the eMail address on the website (now easy to do with a Domain Name using redirection and has the advantage of knowing where the addy was picked up from).
As for the cookie problem that can be managed independently. There are so many ways to skin a cat eh! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
