Hello All,
I have a skype account and someone has got into it somehow.I changed password but it happened again.Only4 cents in the account now so that's stopped them.I live in Australia and calls have been going to Morocco Sweeden and USA none of which have been made by me.Cost me $12. Also there is an odd switch in my address. The street address is ok but postcode is different and country is-Guinea-Belieze.I also have a strange address besides the correct one in my skype e mail contact information. The phone numbers are recorded in my skype accounts list.
I will send this to skype as well but it takes a long time to get any reply from them.
How can I get rid of this pest?Would Langa's no-reformat ,nondestructive total-rebuild option get rid of this mongrel or perhaps a clean install.
I have XP Home.
Would there be some way of shutting this clown down at all?
Thanks for looking,
wombil.

It's hard to tell if they are on your machine or they just have your password. Please post a hijackthis log....

Were the calls made only when your PC was turned on? If so it is likely there is a trojan or a hacker has access or someone has "in-house" physical access to the PC. You could try disabling skype on this pc. Go to another PC and change the password there. Dont start skype on your PC if you can do without it - and see if your account remains untouched until you logon to skype on your own PC again.

You could also try skype on a U3 or other flash drive set to automatically logon on another PC (so no password entered on this PC). Change the settings and then it should autologon to your own PC when the drive is attached. I only use such a U3 drive which I carry around with me and it enables me to skype and phone from any PC with internet access.

Thanks Paul,
The way I first discovered this was I realised my credit was below what I thought it should be.I went into accounts and saw that there were two calls made at 6 am when the machine was turned off and I was still in bed.[lazy bugger].
That's a good trick having skype on a flash drive.I'll try that out.Do I just install skype to that drive?
I have considered uninstalling skype and installing with another name and password but will wait till I get some more informationand definately don't want to top up my credit until this is sorted.
On the skype forum there are quite a few posts about similar problems so it doesn't look like I am the only one having trouble with this issue.
I have reported this to skype but their support is not what one would expect from an organization that seems to be making squillions.

If someone else had guessed or somehow got hold of your password and you changed the password and they were then still able to use the account then either your PC had remained infiltrated/compromised (by someone or some key-logger malware/trojan) or skype's own database was infiltrated (which would seem pretty unlikely).

The real danger/warning is that if your own system has been infiltrated by malware or by physical hacking that other information may be or may have been lifted. Skype's few dollars would be nothing compared to your credit card or on-line banking information, personality id theft and so forth.

The only official way to run Skype Portable is on a Smart U3 Flash Drive (http://software.u3.com/Product_Details.aspx?productId=56). Works a treat IMHO. There are workarounds to install Skype as a portable app on normal USB drives (because not everyone likes the U3 interface with its "control panel") but you will have to Google on how to do that if you want to attempt it.

THANKS MATE,
If I wipe this hdd and reinstall XP that should get rid of any nasties hey?I have googled the way to put skype on usb and it seems simple enough but have'nt done it yet.

I also have skype installed on Linux ubuntu on a separate hdd but using the same name and password.I suppose that would be compromised too?
By reading the skype forum it appears that this is quite a common problem with skype.I cannot get onto the forum to post an article there. After entering my name and password the mozilla page comes up blank. The strange thing is that when I click on the veri-sign logo in the address bar I get a dialogue box that allows me to view my saved password. It's the right one too. This has been unsaved straight away.
I have also discovered a saved credit card which is not mine.It also appears that someone has been trying to put my account on auto debit but has been refused.
SKYPE; The phone company without a phone and a forum you can't write to.
I think it's about time to look elsewhere for voit services.I had one with yahoo but skype seemed better.Any suggestions?

If you system has been compromised then it needs cleaning-up rather than blaming any individual application. I don't make a habit of studying hijackthis logs but the entry
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lm_omar.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lm_omar.exe
looks very suspicious to me and if there is one there may be others. If this doesn't bump one of the experts to make suggestions perhaps post a new thread in the security forum.

You could of course backup data, and clean reinstall. Sometimes it can be the quickest method.

BTW how do you connect to the internet and what sort of connection and router/modem if using BB.

Hi Paul,
I don't know anything about hjt logs but Omar looked a bit sus to me too.
My ISP is DODO and I have adsl through a D-Link DSL-302G modem.
SO far I have,3 phone numbers in Morocco,1 in sweeden and one in USA that has been called.
A hotmail.it address that is not mine,or a contact.
The last 4 numbers on a credit card thats not mine.
Should point to someone if anyone knows how to do it.

I can't find the information clearing that file, so we will go with plan B. Please go to this site (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)and upload the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\lm_omar.exe and post back with the response. This will tell us if the file is good or bad and then we can proceed. You may have to allow hidden files (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx).

If you set the system to view hidden files & folders, then remove it with Hijackthis and post a fresh log.

I have found another file that seems to be connected to Guy jpg .exe
When trying to delete them from my docs the machine says cannot delete, file in use by another program.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FA912BE3] E:\Documents and Settings\miclair\My Documents\guy.jpg w.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msn.exe] E:\Documents and Settings\miclair\My Documents\sexy ass.scr
sexy ass is a screensaver I think.I have not downloaded these files.Miclair is a guest account and I don't believe they were intentionally downloaded there either. It's starting to look like a new install to me.

Paul Komski

Screensavers are a special type of executable file. Because they are executables the file extension is often chosen by malware writers to fool the user into using them.
It's starting to look like a new install to me.
Personally speaking that would be my usual route. Malware has got so good at cloaking itself that it can take as long to clear up a system as it does to do a clean reinstall. No disrespect to those that spend ages of time and effort cleaning infected systems up.

If you do a reinstall then consider making an image file after you have installed your "must have" programs and got everything configured and updated the way you like it. Then you can reimage in the future with much greater ease than a reinstall.

Yes Paul, that is probably the way to go but I would like to see this bug killed.
I don't use the machine for work or business, just normal stuffing around so I'll give it a little more time. This is a good learning experience for me.
I only miss my cheap phone calls through skype but I can not top up my account when someone is using it.SKYPE support is virtually non-existant so I will look elsewhere for voip service.
I will work on this some more and try some things[don't know what] and if I stuff it up I have XP slipstreamed with sp2 so reinstalling is no big thing.
Also have linux ubuntu on a separate hdd on this machone so I'm not desperate.
About the mirror image,How do I do this and where do I store it? I have heard you speak of it before.
I also regard these people who battle these bugs with the highest esteem.
Many thanks to all who have helped.
The machine just switched itself off and nearly ended up in the yard.I have solved this problem with much scientific investigation and dogged pursuit.
I think I had my knee on the on\off button on the case.

Paul Komski

About the mirror image,How do I do this and where do I store it? I have heard you speak of it before.

People all have their own favourites. Mine is the original version of IfD (http://www.paulski.com/zpages.php?id=1917).

The image files can be stored on hard drives or on CD/DVDs.

PS
Part of the problem with modern trojans and other spyware is that they have already got better and better at hiding or cloaking themselves. They don't only hide in the file system (hidden or otherwise) but can operate as drivers and other clever forms of rootkits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit). The time may well come when they are virtually undetectable and apart from the problem of eliminating all malware from a system there may well lurk a suspicion that some latent piece of nastiness remains just waiting for an appropriate moment to pounce.

The trick, if there is one, is to avoid ever getting infected in the first place. I still think it unfair to point the finger at skype when you may have a very compromised system. If your bank account had been raided would you blame the bank or your own inefficient security?

By the way,I am not blaming SKYPE for the infection,I really like the program but.I contacted SKYPE with the same information originally posted here a day earlier and received a confirmation email straight away but no reply after 11 days is a bit lax I think.

Combofix generates a lot of false positives...plus the fact that most scanners will pick up the crap that another scanner sequesters in its 'vault'.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Post back with the log if it creates one or let me know if it didn't work...

Good work Classicsoftware,Re.;
The below concern me. Please check with your ISP to make sure these are from their range of IP addresses....
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{8B56029E-7B51-40C0-8507-73E665833C7C}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

I have checked with my ISP andthey inform me that these addresses are not in their range. They have run these addresses through a machine that they have and the final address or name comes up as "anonymous" and the owner is hiding .Should I delete them with HJT or regedit.
Will wait for advice.
Thankyou

They are not anonymous. They are opendns servers (https://www.opendns.com/smb/start/device/windows-xp) and are commonly used when ones own ISP's dns servers are unreliable. Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS).

LO Paul,I have read the wiki article and can't work out if this stuff is good or bad.My TCP/IP is configured thus;
O obtain DNS server automatically
O usethefollowing DNS server addresses

preferred DNS server 208.67.220.220
alternate DNS server 208.67.222.222

"use the following DNS server addresses" is selected.

Double check with your ISP. If your didn't set it up that way, then you should remove them from your network settings after noting what they are so you can manually reset them if needed....

Those DNS servers listed are the main DNS servers for OpenDNS...

First off (unless someone knows something to the contrary) there's no harm in simply using the opendns servers in place of your ISP's designated ones - in fact you may find, as I have done, that they allow faster web page loading.

If your PC is thus making DNS requests via opendns (rather than using your ISP's ones) your current IP address will be used to determine whether or not you (or your IP address) has an account with opendns.com. If an account was opened then opendns can know that the requests for web addresses are coming from your network or PC. This can be done in straightforward fashion if you have a fixed IP address and a fixed IP address was registered or if you have a dynamic IP address your PC would have to be running an opendns IP address updater all the time that you are on line.

Once an account has been established all I can see are benefits and the possiblity of increasing security by blocking certain types of sites.

Whether your PC is registered at all or transmitting a dynamic IP address or not then I cant see any particular dangers of making requests via their servers or your ISP's ones. There could be differences in where one might be directed when unknown domains are entered into the address bar - but that of itself is, I believe, of little consequence.

If I have got any of this wrong then please peeps let me know.

The only bizarre thing is how they got inserted into your TCP/IP properties if you don't remember doing it yourself!

PS Maybe read about the service on their site (http://www.opendns.com/how/dns/turning-names-into-numbers) if you like. You could even register youself for free and then you could also monitor the actual web traffic directed from your computer.

That was a lucid and cogent explanation and you also got the main caveat that concerns me. How did it get there. It appears to be OK to me....

Well Guys, what a battle, how did they get there?I have the option to automatically select DNS server but it appears that open dns works well so I'll leave it as is for now.The machine is working well and I am a happy man.
Many many thanks to All who have helped fix this problem, even just by looking
helps keep the show on the road.

Now that you are clean, you need to keep it that way. Please follow the rules below. Pay careful attention to number 4. Since the release of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, Microsoft has greatly improved the security of Windows. The majority of attacks now occur in other software. Adobe Acrobat Reader is the most attacked program right now. You need to keep your software up to date and the Secunia PSI is the best way to go.

How to Protect Yourself While On-Line

Make sure you have an up to date Antivirus. Scan Regularly. There are many free versions:

AVAST (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/)
Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html)

Make sure you have a software firewall and if you are on broadband, get behind a NAT router. There are also free versions:

Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/)
Sygate (http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/)
Zone Alarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp%3bjsessionid=BzJnZDxzyCUCcyZMB2t0Q co5IgutuYlrOMI5snmy1ZptQ2vOr1l1!776180791!-1062696904!7551!7552!-2099742426!-1062696903!7551!7552)

Keep Windows up to date. Visit Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and Office Update (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx) regularly.
Keep all of your software up to date. You can check on your software with the Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/). Sign up for e-mail notification and they will tell you when to check your system again.
Use Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/) with the NoScript (http://noscript.net/) extension as your web browser.
Download, install and keep an updated version of SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html).
Do NOT click on links in any I.M. program.
Use Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/) in place of Outlook or Outlook Express.
Use Foxit Reader (http://www.download.com/Foxit-PDF-Reader/3000-2079_4-10313206.html) with the PDF Download (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636) extension instead of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
DO NOT open attachments from ANYONE. Download them, and scan them with your AV before opening and only if your expect to receive them.
If you use IE download a copy of IE-Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm).

Many thanks Classicsoftware,I will certainly follow your advice.I already have Avast installed and use firefox.Just one more question,Does Avast have it's own inbuilt firewall?

classicsoftware

No, use one of the three I listed above. Avast is only an AV program.

If you remember my recent go round with Road Runner's DNS "service", it was very similar to this. Redirecting invalid domain names to their search page with ads.

It wasn't malicious in any way, it just freaked me out and had me thinking I had been hacked. And caused some issues with my LAN.

All the best to You and Yours for now,
