I just picked up a Sony 40x cdrw to replace my Plex 16x. Can I put my Plex in my CD ROM spot and my Sony as the secondary? And if so will I be able to drag & drop or record on the Plex?

Hello Ell,

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

How do you have your devices currently set up on your Primary and Secondary IDEs? If you have available space it ought not be a problem.

However, it would also help to know which Operating System. And, then let the folks here make an assessment as to whether your system is being optimized with the setup that you have. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

How fast does the Plextor READ?

16X

I may be wrong, but I think usually it works best if you put the CD-R/RW in as Master and a regular CD ROM as Slave, probably because most CD writing software looks for it in that position. I'm not positive, but it seems that is usually the setup that works from what I remember about past posts about it on the forums.

You can try it with the Sony set as Slave and see, if it won't work it's not that difficult to swap their positions and change the jumpers...

Pete, or whoever he's impersonating at the time, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif (anyone else in other words,) (edit: oops, wrong thread on that one,,,) because of the way I wanted my tower to be set up, as far as user friendly (to me at least), I had to choose something different than what you claim as best.

As a result I'm having a problem with burn speed on an 8x4x32 CD-R/RW. Will putting the two CD's(rom and r/rw) on the same cable increase my odds of a faster burn to disk? It is starting to sound logical... 'Paleo Pete Spock'? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif I'm about fed up with 2x as the fastest it will go without error disks. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Ell,

It appears that if you follow Pete's suggestion regarding position on the Secondary IDE you will be just fine. My concern was that to optimize your system you would want to steer clear of putting one of these along side your HDD.

Sounds like your good to go! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

What other devices do you have on your ASUS and in what slots?

I have an Antec SX1030 case, a Matrox G450 video card a 30gig Maxtor H/D a 60gig IBM 60GXP and i just ordred a 80gig WD H/D w/8mb cache to replace the Maxtor & 512mb ddr ram. I would like to upgrade my 1.2 T-bird proc & my M/B to a nvidia chipset M/B and a 1700 or 1800xp proc but I wonder is it really worth the diff in performance.
