How does monitor burn happen?

On monitors made since about 1990, it doesn't. Electrons are sprayed from a gun in the monitor through a vaccuum and onto the back of the screen, which cause the phosphors that coat the back of the screen to glow. In older monitors, if the same image was displayed continuously for long periods of time, the "phosphor fatigue" occurred.

Light enters your eyes and creates an electrical stimulation transitted by your optic nerve to your brain. So, this (http://www.craigkidd.co.uk/optical_illusion.htm) is a decent analogy to help understand the the concept.

Since about 1990, better "eyes" have been built. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm not sure if it would have been worth it, even then when monitors were more expensive than now. This is educated guesswork, but let's think about what we've got: a vaccuum sealed cone-shaped chamber from near the middle of the monitor case to the screen itself with a shadow mask or aperture grill sitting just inside of the screen. We're trying to repair the phosphors coating the inside of the glass. Hundreds of thousands of tiny phosphors. You would almost surely have to completely remove the previous phosphor coat and redo the whole screen from scratch. Then fine-position the grill or mask, restore the vaccuum and seal it back.

I very seriously doubt it would have been worth it - prolly cost less to buy a new one.

One more thing - unless you know what you're doing, you are strongly advised not to open a monitor. I certainly won't. Capacitors that can hold a charge upwards of 25,000 volts even after the monitor has been unplugged for months or even years scare me.
