I have just purchased a new Case with A 400Watt power supply in it. The question is: It has two power connectors a standard Large 10 or 12 pin connector and a 4pin connector on both the power supply and the Mboard. my motherboard Soyo SY-P4VDA I will be using a P4 1.6 processor. Do I need to hook up both? If only one is required can It be either one?
If you are using a P4 then yes you need to use the supplimental connector. That is part of the design requirements for a P4 motherboard and power suplly.

Use both connectors. The standard 20 pin ATX connector is for all ATX motherboards.
The ATX+12V 4 pin square connector is only for P4 motherboards and must be used for your motherboard to supply extra 12V power for your P4 processor.
There may be a third connector a 6 pin for multi-processor motherboards you don't need to use it because there won't be a place to plug it in on your motherboard.

This thread is starting to pique my curiosity. If I were to upgrade my pc from 850 meg to a +/- 2gig Athlon XP, will I incur some of the same neccessities?
If I buy just a power supply, are they ALL the same dimensions outside or will I need to consider a case PLUS power supply combo if upping from a 200w to say a 400 watt case? Reason is, I have an older case I would like to keep and it has a frame to insert the power supplies into and seems a well built ATX case but it needs upgrading desperately.
Sorry to side-track S3, but my current PS has an extra lead too that I am not using. I didn't notice the # of leads and for the first time in ages the covers of the pc are on! Ripley's, Believe it,,, or Not,,, or I'd tell ya. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

No because the 4 pin ATX+12V is only for motherboards made for the Intel Pentium 4 processor not the AMD Athlon XP there will not be a place to plug the connector in on the motherboard.

If the Power supply is an ATX power supply it will fit any ATX case. If your PSU is a 200W you would need to upgrade to an AMD approved PSU and almost all new ATX PSUs are ATX+12V you will get the P4 connector whether you want it or not but you won't have a place to plug it in on a socket A (462) motherboard the plugin socket is only found on socket 423 and 478 motherboards.
If that extra connector is square and has 2 yellow and 2 black wires it is a P4 connector. If it is rectangular and has 6 wires in 1 row, 1 red wire, 2 orange wires, and 3 black wires it is for a multi-processor motherboard. My Athlon system has both of these tied up in the top of the case with wire ties don't need either one for an Athlon system only the standard ATX power connector.
