I read through this post: http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=35837 as it seems he is in a similar situation as me!

but im gunna make my own post for this...

Here's what I'm trying to accomplish.

http://photoanon.com/images/bhknrxwjakao13bfp1kz.jpg

I have dialup. I want to share the dialup and/or files from my laptop to PC. Laptop has a wifi card and USB 2.0. PC has dialip modem ONLY and USB 1. Both are using XP. if needed I can get 98, ME, or 2000 on the PC.

I wanna dialin to the net using my PC and have some sort of thing plug in VIA USB/printer port/scanner port and send a signal to my laptop so it can pick it up and use internet and file share.

Also not sure if it's possible.. Just dialin to the net using my PC, and plug a phone cord running from my PC to my laptop to share internet/files.. But i have NO idea how to get that working whatsoever......

Pretty much I want a cheap way to share internet and/or files using wired or not (Although wireless would be ideal)

any suggestions/ebay links/etc. are appreciated!

Thanks!

With dial-up you need to setup ICS on the PC connected to the internet. You then need to organise a LAN between the two computers. You can just use a cross-over wired cable connection or get a router and connect the two computers together, wired (straight through and not cross over) or wireless, via the router.

Okay, looks good except one thing..

On client computer:

8. Click Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.
9. Click Connect using a broadband connection that is always on, and then click Next.
10. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard page, click Finish.

So this means that I have to connect them using a Broadband cord(the wide cord similar to phone cord) and not just just a regular phone cord?

If i CAN use the regular phone cord..
How does it know to use that phone cord? Is it automatic?

Thanks!

You use a regular telephone jack and cord to connect the modem on the chosen computer to the internet using dial-up. The dial-up modem rings the ISP's telephone number like a regular telephone. The RJ11 jack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RJ11) usually has two or four metal connectors and is narrower than an ethernet 8P8C/RJ45 jack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rj45).

You use a LAN ("a broadband connection that is always on") to connect the two (or more) computers using "broadband"/ethernet technology. The use of the term broadband is perhaps confusing because any LAN can be connected to the internet or not. In the case of ICS the LAN uses the first computer as the gateway to the internet. More typically a LAN connects to the internet via a router's upstream port when there is a broadband device available for it to connect to. In this case a router is just one way of creating a LAN and is not used to connect to the internet but does allow computers on the LAN to talk to one another.

Two computers can also be connected to network directly to one another without a router using ethernet cable - but, as stated, such cable must be of the cross-over variety. A router is usually more easy to configure and if it is a wireless router you have the option to connect the PCs wire to wireless, wireless to wireless or wire to wire.

A broadband ADSL modem that attaches to a broadband ISP provider via the telephone lines is a different type of connection than a dial-up connection where sound is modulated-demodulated into a digital signal.
