There is a blocked pin (pin 20) on my 22 inch, ata/100, 80 wire, yellow IDE cable. Is okay if I take a dremal dril and make a hole so it will fit on older Motherboards? Will it cause electrical problums? Pin 20 is refered to as "KEY".

Hi Pat:
Use an 80 wire for what an 80 wire is designed to do and a 40 wire for what it's designed to do.
using an ATA/100 cable in an ata/33 or older P mother boards will likely lead to performance problems
Depending on the Drive/motherboard/master/slave settings you can adversly affect system performance. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

If you're VERY careful with he drill you might not damage the cable, but it might not work on motherboards designed for 40 wire cables. I tried one on this machine, thinking all it would do is add ground wires, which couldn't hurt...turned the machine on and it had a fit...beep city, so I had to remove it and go back to the normal 40 wire cable.
If you really want to try and drill one out, look for a small hand drill, called a pin vise. It's a slim hand held drill used for tiny holes with small woodwork - such as miniatures - plastics, unfired ceramics, models etc. About the size of a short ink pen, with a small chuck and a removable cap on the other end for drill storage. Places like Sears or Lowes should have them. I've had mine for 20+ years, I have no idea where I got it any more...

whislt not directly related to the topic I have a snappy quiry here, if I have a ASUS CUSI mb with ultra DMA 66 can I connect a 60gig 7200 rpm hard drive with a 100 rating?
I can use either 100 or 133pc ram so I am wondering if this is possible.
thanks in advance

Yes, you can run an ATA100 harddrive on a motherboard that only supports up to ATA66. However, the ATA100 harddrive will only run at ATA66.
