The computer that I'm planning to get is:

Thermaltake V9 Mid Tower with Window VJ40001W2Z

MSI R9600GT-T2D512 OC RED MOON Graphics Card PCI-E,N9600GT 512M GGR3 FAN Shader OC Dual DVI-I HDMI Ready HDTV VO Power Cable SLI

320GB 3.5" SATA-II Samsung Hard Drive 16MB Cache 7200rpm 3.5" [HD322HJ]

Logitech Attack 3 Joystick - USB Windows & Mac OS. 11 easy-to-program buttons, simple set-up and plug-and-play convenience, and comfortable handle.

Gigabyte Mainboard GA-EP43-DS3, Intel P43+ICH10,Socket775,PCI-E2.0x16,PCI-Ex1,ATX,4-DDR2 Dual-CH,HD Audio,1394,GbE LAN,6-SATA 3Gb/s,12 USB2.0

LG GH22NP20 Black, IDE DVD-ReWriter, 22x, Dual Layer, Bulk

DDR2-800 Strontium Hynix 2G-Single RAM PC2-6400 CL5 240-Pin DIMM Retail-Pack

Cooler Master 80mm LED Silent Fan Red [TLF-S82-ER-GP]

620W "Corsair" HX-620 ATX Modular Power Supply, 120mm fan, Dual PCI-E Graphics Card Connector, 8 SATA Connectors, Universal AC input 90~264V

Intel E8500 Core 2 Duo Processor - LGA775, 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache 1333Mhz FSB 45nm

But I was wondering, do I need the 620w power supply? And would this computer basically... work? My friend put it together on an online computer seller, and I looked at it and thought it was good, but i'm not sure about the power supply. The graphics card is "pre-overclocked" and I'm pretty sure that nothing else would require the 620w supply, would a 520w supply still work fine?

thanks.

Welcome to PC GUIDE.
It would better to stick to the 520 Watts.

First, when it comes to power supplies, not only does 'size' matter, but quality, too...so what is the other choice?

If it comes down to a cheapo, no-name, junk 520 W vs that Corsair 620W, stick with the Corsair.

Also, a 500-ish is going to give you less expansion room. While you may not need the 620 W, at this moment, it will be a good thing to have, if at some point you want to add more drives, change you graphics card, etc. Power supplies are dynamic...they only draw what they need. Plus that Corsair is a fairly efficient model...so it can be cheaper to run than a less efficient, lower powered model.

Also, you said this was configured at a on-line seller...what is the price. There are a couple of items there, while ok or basic, can probably be found cheaper or a better version found for the same price, elsewhere.

I've made a couple of changes since yesterday, such as the processor and obvously power supply, and slightly off topic:
On the 17th of November, the i7 comes out, i think. Apparently if I wait until then, my processor will come down in price, so I may be able to get a bigger power supply. Is it worth waiting (and will it definetly come down in price)?
thanks :D
ps I'm buying from austin.net.au
