The Internet

What is the Internet exactly? I connect to the Internet through my ISP but how do they (my ISP) connect to the Internet? How do European and USA
parts of the Internet connect? Via Satelite? Cables running under the Sea? I've been doing some reading about ARPAnet and such and it talks about four machines originally been connected - UCLA, Stanford, and a couple of others but I'm not clear about whether they had a physical cable between them (surely not?) or whether it was done with phone lines or what really. I'd be really grateful if anyone could shrad a bit of light on this for me.
