Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free download and will read these files whereas Adobe Acrobat is used to create PDF files and is quite expensive.

Portable Document Format

Supposedly the smallest filesize for documents, which is the reason it's used commonly on the Internet.

The rest has been covered pretty well...

Funny, whenever I convert text files to PDF format...they almost treble in size! The "thing" about PDF formatted files is they can't be modified or changed. I think that's why you find a lot of governmental forms can be downloaded or printed from the internet, but they can't be filled in on the internet. A lot of court documents are being electronically filed...in PDF format.

Hope I didn't muddy the water!

You can download the following FREEWARE files and make your own PDF files.
Redmon (rediretion monitor) - GhostScript - Ghost View] - Free PDF -

This is what I use to make and store the majority of my want to keep docs. Works great in Win9x but have not gotten round to trying in XP yet as it takes a wee bit of time to set up (At least it takes me a wee bit of time (remember I am the master of the understatment :D) .
When I need it I just pop back into 98

J mcRae mentioned about Government papers and the Adobe acrobat reader and I just want to say if you have Adobe Acrobat (not the (free)reader but the whole program) you can fill out the form and mail it to them.

Thanks for the information ziba-june. I have never had any experience with the full Adobe Acrobat program. Sorry if I spoke incorrectly!

Just a quick addition.

Adobe Illustrator can also create PDF documents. :)

I've got Adobe Acrobat (the full-blown beast, not the reader) installed. It occupies a mere 80mb of disk space and when I start it up all the lights in the house get dim and the refridgerator cuts out. I converted a 750kb Word document a few days ago (how Word manages to create a 750kb document from a few pages of text is beyond me, but I digress).

Acrobat chugged along for 20 minutes or so, drained all the RAM from my machine and from a couple of my neighbour's, and eventually spit out a trim 700kb PDF document. (Why a few pages of text in PDF format have to occupy 700kb is beyond me, but, again, I digress.)

I rummaged around in the help files (which are in PDF format of course; what a nuisance) and eventually found this neat 'optimize for the web' feature (my file was intended for web download). The help file said to use this feature when you wanted to "optimize the file and reduce filesize to a minimum for web downloading" (or words to that effect). Great! I thought. I followed instructions to the letter, the lights dimmed again for a half hour, the backup generator cut in at the neighbouring health centre, but then presto! I had a new, optimized file!

It was 5,765 kb.

The document is now online in HTML format, the only real portable document format.

Nah, wasn't me. Maybe Mayor Bloomberg was making a PDF of his annual budget :)

Hehe...got to thinking (yeah, pretty dangerous thing!:p ), instead of a denial of service attack...

What if a hacker got into a few thousand computers and had them process a pdf file all at the same time?? From your experience I would think something of that magnitude would create some serious power grid problems...

Hello everybody!

I have seen very nice PDF files in very compact size but files I created have two major problems:

1. They are not as clear as I would like. These inclued files scaneed by scanner and converted from Word documents.

2. File size is too large to be sent as attachments with emials.

Recently I found that printing the PDF file with Acrobat Distiller (format is still PDF) reduces the size of the file most of the times amaizingly though not as small as other files I have seen with almost the same amount of contents.
