I want to export tracks I recorded in pro tools at a studio on campus and import them into a different program that I own (probably Aurdor) and work on them at my leisure. The last time I tried using my personal external hard drive, the mac wouldn't see it. I think it has something to do with how it's formated, but I don't want to format it to get things to work right as I have other things on it.

Any suggestions on a cheap external hard drive that can stand a little abuse, but will work between macs and Ubuntu, XP, or Vista?

Use a FAT format. FAT is cross platform compatible between Windows, Linux and Mac. A pen drive should do for "small" amounts of memory otherwise just use about any hard drive enclosure. All the computers would need the appropriate USB or Firewire ports of course.
