I can't say that I check my Network Connections screen all that often, but today when I did I saw something I've never seen before and would really appreciate it if someone could tell me if this is something I should be worried about from a security standpoint.

When I go to: Start>connect to>show all connections
I see a new, active line of selections. It says "Local Area Connection on ActionTec on GT701-WG". When I click on it, a status popup screen displays that says I have been connected 2 days x hours, xx minutes, xxx seconds.

Below that, I see my normal and expected "Wireless Network Connection..." which, when I click on it, shows my wireless status on a popup window.

I have never seen the ActionTec connection stuff before. I haven't done any reconfiguring of my computer or wireless network in many weeks. I have had several recent security updates.

I am running wireless through Qwest which both my husband and I use for accessing the internet on our separate laptops. We do not have a separate pc acting as our server, rather a "modem" that was supplied by Qwest.

Can anyone tell me what this new, unknown ActionTec pop-up window and connection stuff is?

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

That is your modem/router provided by Quest. Even if you are not actively using it as router to connect your system as a network it is still seen as a device in your network. And you are using it as a modem. You have to or you would not be able to connect to the Quest network.

Apparently Actiontec provides devices for Quest as well as Verizon and others. Have a look here (http://www.actiontec.com/products/category.php?fid=25) and you can see the models similar to the one you listed (GT701-WG). You probably have a slightly older model and these are the latest.

Thanks much! I suspected that was it, but I am also sure that this is something new displaying and thought it was worth a check
