Hello
I have an amd pc its not quiet two years old running xp sp2.
Generally it runs great but lately on start up it beeps normally etc...but runs hard and loud briefly and is very unsettlling.

Kinda like the disc drive sounds when it runs but there is no disc in it and I dont "think" its that.

I dont want her to die! I love my pc.

Any ideas?

Thanks

PS; one time it did this I slightly tilted the tower and righted it and it stopped making the noise, not sure if it was coincidence at is does stop eventually on its own as it loads.
the xp microsoft screen has already appeard during this noise then it stops.

What kind of graphics does it have? on-board or add in card?

When was the last time it was thoroughly cleaned...heatsinks/fans?

yeah I'm with mjc definite blowout/vacuum out for starters.
Could be case fan maybe getting ready to bite the dust?
Don't forget to blowout/vacuum out the PSU, I forget that sometimes.
Oh and if you can, take it outside!! Dust floating all over the house is not nice!
I had a graphics card fan that was going belly up but it took help and time to track it down to that, those can make some wild noise and you think it's the HDD or other fans.

It would be a good idea to check ALL the fans for excess free play as well

If the bushing is going it will spin out/off and then reseat itself
Making it very loud for a time then quiet down
Sure sign of a future doa fan

Hi everyone and thanks for input really appreciate it.
I have an onboard graphics card I assume since it came w/ tower.
My hd well not too full like 60 some percent free.

I will de dust it and see if it helps thanks for input, i always get nervous opening it up tho' dont want to static kill it or something being a greenhorn, Ive read up on it in past tho''.

I will stop back and let you know how it turns out...Id hate to have to buy a new tower right now I really am not a fan of vista. Id like to keep xp for now.

Granted my only contact w/ vista is reading up and using my sisters pc but still Id like to keep xp pre installed that is.

Thanks again :)

Well I cleaned out the dust bunnies last week, no noise since ! :O)
It didnt look that dusty tho' not like in past, still it must have been, or its a strange coincidence I dont know.

I did remember to get the dust out of the psu fan this time, maybe didnt in past since its up under where I dont see it too well so maybe that was it.

Its amazing to me that it could make that much noise from dust!
And not appear that bad to start with.

But then this from the person who was so shocked the tower would make such a fuss on start up from an old bad keyboard that I didnt know needed replaced because it worked! LOL
I learn as I go, I guess we all do.

Hey thanks! ;O)
