Freeware/Shareware C++ Compiler

I would like to do some C++ programming in my spare time, but can’t justify spending 2-3 hundred dollars for a commercial C++ compiler. Can someone tell me where I can find a freeware or inexpensive shareware C++ compiler?

microsoft free visual studio is pretty good..
http://www.microsoft.com/express/vc/

and.. it is free. Comes bundled with it stuff for creating Windows programs.
