So I got a free Emachines C1641 recently from a friend, and have been using it to tinker around on and figure out some things in the computer world. I have really enjoyed it, and always wanted to build my own PC, so I was thinking I could slowly upgrade this setup until it becomes my own. Here are the specs right now:

MOBO: ASUS P4V8X-MX
CPU: Intel Celeron D 2.93 ghz
RAM: 512 mb
HDD: Samsung 40 gb
PSU: Leadman 300w
Integrated sound and video cards

Would I be able to realistically upgrade piece by piece (I understand some new pieces may require others with them for compatibility sake), or would this idea not work? Thanks a lot.

Well, old eMachines were "appliance" PCs, designed to be used then tossed vs upgraded. They have a marginal (less than 300W) power supply, and sometimes older technology internal components purchased as close outs. That one came with a 40 Gig HDD, 256MB DDR memory, integrated video (not a card) and XP Home.
They are useful for those who want to use a PC only for light duty, email etc.
Look on the bright side, it is cheap.
:)

Save your money for a "built-it myself" PC.
