View Full Version : Why won't my computer shut down?

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and when I go to turn it off at night it won't shut down. It gets to a Windows screen that says "Saving your Settings" and stays there all night.....and there's nothing I can do to change this screen.....no CTRL, ALT, DELETE or anything will affect this screen. It stays right there and won't shut down....about 3/4 of the time this happens........sometimes it goes ahead and shuts down correctly.....but that's rare.
I have to do a "hard" shutdown in order to get it turned off.
I would appreciate your assistance with correcting this problem.

Although this could be a couple hardware reasons, it could also be malware. so an HJT log posted here (or in the Security Forum) would get the ball rolling to your solution (cure). :)
You should know the drill... ;)

Another pcguide member told me to post my "HJT log" in hopes of helping me. It seems he thought my computer was infected or had malware or other problems the computer is having shutdown problems (the windows shutdown screen gets to "saving your settings" and stops; from there I have to do a hard shutdown because my mouse and keyboard cease to function at this point) and slow operation.
Just now my 2008 Symantec Internet Security program found 5 Trojan.Wimad's which were quarantined. I hope I have followed your instructions correctly. Here is the first part of my HJT log (the remainder follows since it was too long for one post):

PrntRhd, should I have posted this somewhere else? I've had no response.
Fruss suggested maybe I should post it in a Security Forum.
What do you think as a moderator?

Moved it to Applications & Security, if clean, maybe Paul Komski, MJC, or someone else can look at the issue.

First:
How to run a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.[/QUOTE]
Second:
Please do the following:
Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop (it needs to be run from the Desktop). Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause the program to stall...
Third:
Re-boot the system
Post the MBAM log
Post the Combofix log
Post a new HJT log
Tell us how the system is running.

The computer at least shut down.....but it seems slow in doing so.....it sort of hangs up at the "windows is shutting down" screen for about 10+ seconds. I'll say this.....I have way too many programs that pop up on the screen everytime I turn my computer on....and I have to close them all before I have a clean desktop......guess I'll go to start-> run -> msconfig and deselect some of the programs in the "start" tab. BTW, I was in "selective" startup; now I see I'm in "normal" startup....something changed this. I was told by Verizon last year to set it that way (for some reason). I have slow DSL from Verizon.
As I had said previously, this shutdown problem doesn't happen ALL the time......so it could happen tonight when I shut it down. But if and when it does give me trouble, I'll post here to let you know.
Anti-Malware didn't find any problems; no malware. Combofix said I didn't have a "Windows Recovery Console" so it helped me load that.....whatever that's for????
Nor did Combofix find any problems to my knowledge.
But you guys will have to tell me what's going on because I'm lost in HJT.....at least I'm learning something.
Thanks guys. Hope to hear "something" from you folks about this issue.

Do NOT use MSCONFIG to select what programs to load at startup.
For the duration of fixing your problems, leave it as is with all programs loading.
Afterwards, go to Black Viper's (http://www.blackviper.com/) site and follow the tips and tricks there to tweak your system for better performance. I believe it is "Services" of some type that is recommended to use instead of msconfig.

I'll do as you say Fruss.....that is not a problem. I just appreciate the attention I'm getting right now. I hope we can fix the "problems"....whatever they might be.

It appears this is really not a badly infected PC. What I would do is:
Start removing some of the programs one at a time and see how the system performs...
p.s. how much RAM in the system?

Is it infected at all classic?
I have 4GB of RAM installed but since I have 32bit Windows XP Home, my computer only "sees" 3.25GB. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.0 GHz Dual core CPU.

Combofix removed some minor stuff....

I'll let you know tomorrow how my shutdown went tonight.

Well, it did shut down after hanging at the "windows is shutting down" screen for about 25 seconds.
However, prior to reaching that point, a box entitled "Ending Program WMS Idle" ran......then it said "this program is not working".......I had to click on "end program" to get it to proceed to shutdown.
I have three computers and this one is the only one I'm having shutdown trouble with.....could it be SP3? The others don't have SP3; one doesn't even have SP2 (an HP).

Hi Paul, it did shut down but it "hung" at the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen for nearly 25 seconds. I didn't think it was going to shut down.
Therefore, I haven't tried your suggestion yet. I'll hold off on that until it doesn't shut down at all like it was doing.
