File Corruption and Reboot

I am checking some old dvds with zip files on them. When i try to copy a corrupt file, it takes forever for it to timeout and return an error. It usually locks up the system. Is there a way to get windows to release a file, timeout quicker or something, so i don't have to completely reboot the system?
