I have an old computer (Pent90)and old motherboard with a socket 5 that I am just using to experiment with. I installed a 1.7 gig HD but it's only showing about 500mb. Is that because of the age of the computer? If so, where can I find a cheap socket 7 motherboard and processor?

Most likely a hard disk barrier (http://www.PCGuide.com/ref/hdd/bios/size.htm). You don't need to change your hardware though. See the area of the site I just linked and look at the page on overcoming hard disk barriers.
You can use a drive overlay program like EZ drive to get around the problem, or a cheap add-in controller card. Before you do, check in the BIOS program to see if there is a setting to enable "Large" or "LBA" mode, which may fix this problem. Good luck.
