Hello All,
I have been trying to configure wireless connection from adsl with no result so far.
The system is XP home sp2.with adsl by speedstream 4200 modem
I am trying to use D-Link DIR 300 router and
Netgear G 54 adapter
I have the installation disks for the router and adapter.
At the start of installing the router the installer finds the router and internet connection ok but when the router is wired according to the installer the internet connection is lost. After many tries I got this fixed.
Next trouble is when the adapter is configured and set to go the internet connection is lost again.Signal from the router to adapter is "excellent".
The internet connection seems to be getting lost between the modem and the router. I have tried all the troubleshooting tricks over and over, unplugging etc to no avail.
Any ideas on this please.I am starting to think it may be a compatibility problem between the router and modem. It's my sister's pc so I won't see it for a couple of days now.

I'm probably being dumb but is the Netgear adapter a USB Wireless Dongle or something else plugged into the computer.

It is generally preferable (and may be mandatory) to setup the router using a wired connection. When the router is configured for WAN and Wireless access you should be able to then connect wirelessly.

The netgear adapter connects to usb [like flash drive],don't know if it's called a dongle.
I have set up the router whilst the dsl modem is wired to the pc as directed in installation disk.Signal between router and adapter is reported as "excellent".
final connection is;Phone - dsl - dsl modem -router - wireless adapter connected to pc via usb.
I know that you are definately not dumb.

If the internet works using a wired connection then the wireless connection from adapter to router has not been set/selected in XP (even though the signal is OK) or it is being blocked by an access key/password (WPA rather than WEP preferably) set in the router wireless settings but not entered within the XP wireless setup.

This might be helpful. (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/wireless.mspx#4)

Thanks Paul,The link looks helpful altho I think I have already done things in a similar fashion.Be a couple of days before I get back there.Probably do a clean install and start from scratch as the pc was given to her by her daughter and who knows what's on there.

Problem solved Guys,
The modem supplied by optus has a block on it to keep other systems/people/users out.About 40 minutes on the phone to D-Link got this sorted out.
The amazing thing was that I could actually understand the bloke on the phone.
Thanks All,
wombil.
