Recently, I downloaded a file that was somehow incomplete (without any diagrams that the document itself refers to) and erased the list of downloaded files from the downloader in Firefox 3+. I was tired & was late and decided to look at it the next day, probably this was the reason I erased the downloader info. Anyway, when I started to look at the doc I noticed it lacked the diagrams & its structure wasn't looking good either. So I decided to edit it to see if I could understand it better but it was a task that would take much time. I went back to search the web for the file again but this time I wasn't lucky & couldn't replicate my previous moves & never found it to redownload it. I kept editing the doc & finished (the amount of time spent in relation to this doc has been around 17 hrs), but I still think I'm unable to extract all the info I need from it.
My question is if there's a file, maybe a system file, that isn't visible right away when you right-click upon a file & select properties where Windows xp saves this kind of info? If it exists, how can I get to it & extract the info I need to get back to where I downloaded it?

In FF hit ctrl-h to open the history folder...then look through the list of sites in it to see if one rings a bell...

Thanks for responding mjc. I use that feature a lot & that was the first thing I tried. The problem is that I also use another feature of FF: to clean cookies, temp files, cache, etc. after closing it, automatically.
I've read something from TechRepublik that steered my mind toward the "fact" that windows store much more info about what users do with their equipment than it's openly discussed. Within that avenue I thought that there might be something outside the browser that might help with this. The article in question from the TechRepublik site is: ~$fosdick_Secure_Windows_PC_Privacy_17

The problem is the tracking that you are talking about is software dependent...and since you already clean out FF's files when closing, you erase the tracking. IE on the other hand doesn't clean everything out.

To put it another way...MS OS + MS Software = more tracks left behind.

MS OS + thirdparty software = considerably less to none.
