Hey all, i am buying my 10 year old daughter a laptop for Xmas. Was surfing and at New Egg there is an Acer Aspire One, i am pretty knowledgeable as far as the memory and and other basics, but as far as the Operating System, which is linux?? The processor, Intel Atom I have no clue about these?? Could someone look over this with a little more CPU smarts and give me some opinion either way. For the price which is only 249$ shipping included i thought it was a deal. Thanks ;)

Intel's Atom CPU (http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ParentRadio=All&ProcFam=3008&SearchKey=)

It's a very strange CPU. The first full-featured x86 CPU with in-order execution in over a decade! It works just fine. No reason not to like it. But from an architectural point of view, it's a bit of a circus act.

This new wave of small laptops (8" to 9" screen, under $400 USD) are called Netbooks, and they're all the rage! :p Mostly because of their price. Practically a disposable laptop! But there are a few caveats with these netbooks. First of all, they don't come with an optical drive. They're too small. So the optical drives that go with each model are sold separately. Not a huge extra cost, but relative to their price it's something to be aware of. Secondly, as in your case, they sometimes come with a non-Micro$oft operating system. Linux is the obvious "other" choice, since it's completely free. But if you don't know the myriad ways of Linux, this can be a deal-breaker. My advice would be to stick with Windows if you have no idea what Linux is. No point in turning a cool little toy into a major headache if you don't have to!

Acer makes some of the best netbooks available right now. Shop around for a different Acer model that includes WinXP, and don't forget to pick up the optical drive with it.

I think Acer computers are good.
My Desktop computer is an Acer Aspire.
I Recommend using window xp.

In my opinion xp is the best windows Os because it isn't as bloated as windows vista. I have vista ultimate on my Desktop computer the system files alone take 15.6 GB. Depending on what service pack xp is using it takes between 1.8 and 2.8 GB and it also takes less ram to run.

I use vista so I can use Directx 10

I would think that its an ideal computer for office work.
Linux is pretty user friendly and the processor is good for a netbook

I'd suggest spending an extra $50 on something else.
