What makes you think you are infected?

It's a friend's laptop. During class or in the library, all of a sudden window and window of IE will start opening one after the other until she has 50 or 60 windows open and just has to reset her computer. She says she isn't running anything or doesn't click on anything when it happens. Just using word and internet. Does the log look ok? Thanks.

Please uninstall or disable Windows defender and spyware doctor.... then:

First:
How to run a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.[/QUOTE]

Second:

Please do the following:


Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop (it needs to be run from the Desktop). Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you.


Note:

Do not mouseclick Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause the program to stall...

Third:


Re-boot the system
Post the Combofix Log
Post the MBAM log
Post a new HJT log
Tell us how the system is running.

Thanks, Classic. Quick question though, is there some unique way or anything I need to uninstall or disable the defender and spyware doctor? I just don't want to screw something up and she lose her materials. We're right in the middle of law school exams, and if she lost her outline for class, she'd be screwed. Ideally, I would like to simply disable them without completely removing them from her computer, since it's hers and not mine. Thanks.

If this is the case, she should use Firefox instead of IE with the NoScript extension installed and wait until after finals are over. She should back everything up because even if she waits, the spyware can overcome and cripple the system. The choice is hers... It can happen either way... Let me know.

That's one way to do it and if there aren't a large amount of items to backup, that is what I usually do. But if you've got more than a few documents already organized into a folder, it is better to use a backup program. Windows usually includes one, but it can be an optional install and if it isn't evident on the Start Menu then you'll need a Windows disk to put it on (some manufacturers have the install files on the hard drive, so it may be possible to add 'optional' Windows components without a disk...)

There are a host of both free and pay for utilities to replace the include MS one...
