I found this Compac X on the side of the road. I had to put in a DVD and CD player and it turns on. Now the problem is that when I connect it to a monitor, the monitor receives no signal? The graphics card is an ATI. Pretty fancy considering it has a fan built in. Anyway what could be the problem? Thanks in advance. :)

there could be multiple problems
first lets ask the basics
have you tried the monitor with another pc to make sure it works
if your monitor works,
then try booting the pc with just the following:
motherboard, video card (if there is no onboard card), ram, psu, and cpu and plugged into the monitor

Yes to all questions and I tried everything you told me to do already. Could it possibly be the fact that this computer needs a better monitor?
If the monitor works on another machine, then it is not the problem piece of hardware...
Do you hear any beeps when you turn the machine on?
Chances are that if it was put out for trash pick up it was something a little more serious than monitor problems...like possibly a bad video card.

Is there a way to tell if a video card is bad just by looking at it? I'll try it with a different video card when I have some free time. If I could tell just by looking at it I wouldn't have to go through the hassle. Thanks you've been very helpful so far.

if it still does not work with another video card, you should also try testing the ram, and the cpu
if all of those work then it's probably your motherboard
