Congratulations are in order! Way to go, Logitech!!

-----------------

The article as a whole, however, is just ludicrous! Who is this Gartner idiot who claims the mouse will be dead in 5 years!?

"Just look forward five years and computer screens will be built into the walls of our homes and that would make it difficult to drive with a mouse. That's where all the new technology like multi touch and facial recognition comes in."

WTF?? I am NOT going to stand next to a wall and caress it while I work on a document! I am also NOT going to sit at my desk and stick my tongue out at the screen to activate a spell macro in World of Warcraft! And can you imagine a voice-activated shooter? What the heck would your game do if you shouted expletives at it because you just got sniped again by do_m3fr0mb3hind!?

Mr. Prentice needs to go back to business school and learn what the term emerging markets means! I'll give you a hint, you Gartner moron: ADD, not SUPPLANT!! (And to answer your next question, no, you do not need to water a supplant!)

Multi-touch screens and gesture manipulation are great. They'll be very cool and possibly even useful once the interface software matures. But a replacement for the mouse? I don't think so. Just look at the CRT vs LCD debacle. How long did it take for LCD monitors to outright replace CRT monitors? Gee, I don't know, because it hasn't happened yet!! Or what about the apparent doom of the floppy disk/drive? Let me check... nope, still there! See a pattern yet, Mr. Prentice?

The Gartner Group is very good at what they do. And apparently, they are very bad at what they don't do. Give it a rest, you guys. You're out of your league and have no idea what you're talking about...

Mr. Dooley - Keep making those mice! And I'll keep buying. 70% of my waking hours interfacing with computers doesn't lie. The mouse is king.

Smooth electronically generated voice...

I'm sorry, sir, but that directive is physically impossible to comply with. I am not an anatomically correct interface, for that you must upgrade to the Flint Model 6900.

Technological advancement has to start with an idea somwhere. I would agree Saph that caressing a wall's not gonna cut it... However, it sounds quite a bit more sanitary than cleaning mouse balls...that was disgusting at times! Thank goodness for someone coming up with another use for lasers...

it sounds quite a bit more sanitary than cleaning mouse balls...Not if you're a parent! :p

But seriously, it all sounds cool. Really cool. I'd love to have a multi-touch display on a wall! I just don't think it will replace the mouse, much less be mainstream in 5 years.

Well, unless you work for the Gartner Group. ;)
