Hey guys,

A few "random" questions here, but they're still in dire need of some answers! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

1.) My Creative SoundBlaster Live! Platinum has, as does any normal sound card, a "game port," typically used by joysticks.

Well, my motherboard ALSO has an on-board game port... so that leads me to ask which is better to use, why, how do I use the onboard port and not the sound card one in Windows 2000 Pro, and what kind of conflicts/problems can I expect?

2.) My computer works fine, save for when I enable Hardware/Software ECC in the BIOS. Windows 2000 locks up RIGHT AT THE START of the black screen where it says "press F8" for advanced options and that white bar scrolls over. I've been told that my i840 chipset, which has a Memory Repeater Hub (MRH) is not really stable with ECC memory (because the chipset was designed for RAMBUS memory, and needs the integrated MRH to use SDRAM).

Is this the case, or could it be something else? Both the motherboard (Supermicro PIIIDM3) and the memory (Two Kingston PC133 SDRAM chips with ECC/SPD) are brand spankin' new!

3.) If I enable Chassis Intrusion Detection in my BIOS, as well as other forms of "events," such as System Management Interrupt (SMI) and SCI (whatever THAT is), how do I "capture" them? How do I read them? A guy at Supermicro said that I needed something like Intel LANDesk to do that, but I'm hoping there's other ways...

I'd prefer it if the system halts when the chasis intrusion detection switch is released (the cover is off on that chassis/case)...

4.) S.M.A.R.T. for hard drives supposedly predicts hard drive errors; but how? I've heard of two methods: small files on the hard drive that are constantly created and updated (in the background), and then there's "reporting potential problems" (maybe by an alert?).

5.) Also, How does SMART detriment system performance, if at all?

Well, if anyone knows the answers to any of these questions, feel free to lend a hand! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
