View Full Version : Unable to access Internet via Network

Have been running 10 PCs with XP-professional on network. 8 PCs on cable. 2 PCs wireless. One of the wireless PCs failed and was replaced with another, running XP-Home. PC has good connection (4 out of 5 bars) but cannot access Internet.

Network is on Time Warner Road Runner cable. I understand that RR allows 10PCs on network and all PCs could access Internet before. Replacement PC gets an error message, stating that server cannot be found.

All hardware seems to be working. Can it be that XP-home can't work on a network with other PCs XP-Pro?

Thanks for any help.

No problems working with pro. Home is supposed to only support being able to access no more than 5 PC's, but even if that is so it would not stop you from getting on the internet.

I would check the usual things like is it getting an IP address? Make sure your firewall isn't blocking your browser.

In a cmd prompt type in ipconfig /all

Post results here.

Is the wireless access using WinXP's or a third party's software and is any WEP or WPA passphrase required?

Thanks for replies. Using 3rd party software, which previous PC was. Entered WEP passphrase OK. Haven't checked this PCs firewall. Will do that and also the 'ipconfig/all' command and post results.

First, why is there a bridge? Second this is clearly a firewall issue as you cannot get an IP address on this PC

Have been suffering from flu, so could not reply until now. Reason for bridge:
"In Windows XP MS has decided that it would be easier to have a single MAC address for all devices in the PC...this shows itself when you do your 'ipconfig/all' command and the description line for the adapter is 'Mac Bridge Miniport.' To fix this problem, unbridge your ethernet adapter."

I have a Realtek ethernet card in this PC. To fix the problem, I removed the Local Area Connection from the bridge. Bridge disappeared.

Upgraded the XP-home to XP-Pro and turned off the firewall. Still did not work. I am using an Airlink USB wireless adapter. To configure the adapter after the driver has been installed, I've used the Airlink utility to configure the adapter, as well as the Windows utility. Neither works. Inserted is the latest ipconfig information:

Host Name .................................: your-sz6x6sefxo
Primary Dns Suffix ........................:
IP Routing Enabled ........................: No
WINS Proxy Enabled ......................: No

Internet adapter Wireless Network Connection 8:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix .........:
Description ...................................: IEEE 802.11g USB Wireless LAN
Physical Address ............................: 00-11-A3-03-12-BB
Dhcp Enabled .................................: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled ................: Yes
IP Address .....................................: 0.0.0.0
Subnet mask ..................................: 0.0.0.0
IP Address .....................................: fe80::211:a3ff:fe03:12bb%6
Default Gateway .............................:
DHCP Server ...................................: 255.255.255.255
DNS Servers ...................................: fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1

I'm doing something wrong but at this point am going nowhere.

Help.

Finally solved problem. Found that the PC had Norton installed. Uninstalled this and uninstalled the adapter. Then, reinstalled adapter and all worked OK.

Thanks for help.
