I'm thinking about buying a 19 inch wide screen monitor. Staples has an Acer on sale for $129.88. Is the 19 inches a diagonal measurement or is 19 inches the actual width? Thanks. ~Frank~

Most Monitors are measured Diagonally

A 19 wide screen is small today
Compared to what is out there

Acer X193Wb Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
Acer spec Dimensions (W×H×D) 18.1" x 14.3" x 6.5"

As you can above the unit size is less than 19"

Thanks, Rick. I think I'll go ahead and get it.

19" for widescreen is a bit small, but if you have been using, say a 17" CRT, then you will likely quite enjoy it. Widescreen rocks.

Acer is good brand and the price is good... :)

That's exactly what I've been using is 17"CRT. So, I'm sure I will enjoy the other.

My desktop uses an old ACER LCD. I have been very happy with it. Nothing special, but very reliable.

I got my monitor today and I have it set up. I like it but the picture is not as sharp and crisp as was on my old CRT. I realize that I have some adjusting to do for contrast, color, etc. So I'm sure that I can get it better than it is now. I should expect it to be at least as good as my old monitor, shouldn't I?

Make sure you have the correct resolution set for the new monitor. For a 19" widescreen it should be 1440x900. LCD's are at their best at their native resolution.

Make sure in display properties, appearance tab, effects button, in the drop down box for "use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" choose Cleartype.

Also keep in mind they say if you can reach out and touch the screen you are too close for an LCD.

And if you are still running XP...don't be afraid to play around with ClearType.

I set the resolution to 1440x900 and it's looking better. I'm going to check some of the other things that you mentioned such as Cleartype, etc. I'm sure I can get it to look better yet. I told my wife at breakfast this morning that I'm glad I became a member of this group. You guys have helped me out a lot. Thanks

Check out this (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/tune-your-cleartype-font-settings-in-windows-vista/) if you are running vista. Or even on XP if you want more control than on or off.
