The teacher confiscated Linux CDs and reprimanded a student because she thought "Linux is not legal and only Windows should be in schools" and wanted to turn the HeliOS distributor over to the police:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/965/1049965/school-teacher-bans-linux

Of course she now gets to meet the developer of HeliOS who would love to educate this educator about FOSS at her Superintendent office after Christmas break .

I suggest she reads up on the subject.
And while she is at it also discover FreeBSD Unix, Apple OSX, and other computer OSes.

And people wonder why I'm not a fan of the education system...and why I prefer home-schooling/private schools over the public ones?

Sheesh...

The term "Brainwashed Microsoft User" springs to mind with respect to this teacher's responce on the whole to this. The BMU's are exactly the kind of user that MS want to breed more of...

you guys do realize most computer users in general dont know squat about OS's. Even a school teacher doesnt have to know anything outside of whats required to be taught to kids. She likely didnt know Linux was free plus Windows is the OS schools use and therefore part of the requirement during learning use.

when i was in school, my teacher only knew about DOS cause at the time, DOS 3 was the learning requirement to pass the class. Linux or Apple os knowledge would not have helped me pass the class at all.

had the kid been passing out cracked windows disks, she may have not realized anything simply cause she apparantly doesnt know whats legal and whats not.

theres also this statement made that serves alikely reason
However he pointed out that the Vole pumps shedloads of cash into her teachers union so it probably was important that she "recommend" Microsoft Windows" or else she would might get reprimanded at the least or fired.

That's the annoying part. She can be forgiven for not knowing that Linux is perfectly legal. But proclaiming that it's illegal when it's clearly not is deliberate obfuscance, and that's just plain madness.

I along with many others tried Linux during college.
This made me laugh out loud. Like Linux is some kind of "gateway os". Ah, college days. Drugs, alcohol, free sex, and lots of late-night Linux parties.

It is impossible in today's society to home school your children. For one, the average parent is an idiot to begin with. Second, like it or not, you have to assimilate with society. Home-schooling only produces maladjusted individuals with social issues.

What parent is going to spend 40 hours a week teaching there kids on top of going to work???

I see things have been swinging around in school again

It wasn't but 12 years or so ago
That My oldest daughter had to show her high school teacher
How To Connect ( monitor, keyboard, mouse, cat cable) and start a system in the class room

At that time EVERY system there was APPLE with the exception of the keyboarding class that used WordPerfect 5.n from floppy disks

The school even sent out a note asking for someone to donate a windows system for use in the office .
I told them I would built a number of systems for the school IF They used them for the KIDS

I was told they didn't want to confuse the kids with another OS

I didn't donate the system
I did advice them to catch up with the rest of the world
Then do a survey of the students asking who had what computer at home..

I already knew they had mostly windows 95 based systems at home

BTW
This was around the time APPLE quit selling systems to schools for under manufacturers cost
While still OVER Charging for the home systems

False, it is a very viable option that is widely used in every state in this country.

For one, the average parent is an idiot to begin with.

That's nice to know...are you a parent?

Second, like it or not, you have to assimilate with society. Home-schooling only produces maladjusted individuals with social issues.

Sounds like you've bought into the biggest fallacy about home schooling around...are you a member of the teacher's union?

Oh man, you've done it now.

I've known many parents who have home-schooled their children. For one thing, it takes a parent about three to four hours per day to do what it takes a public school eight hours to fail to accomplish.

If you would like an example of maladjusted individuals with social issues, try being a chaperone at a middle school dance. I knew public schools were nothing but trouble the day I saw a twelve year old girl at a junior high dance with thong underwear exposed over the tops of her low-riding jeans.

I agree that socializing a child is important. But saying that public schools are a good place to socialize them is like saying a bathtub full of live squid is a good place to get cleaned up.

I could introduce you to a number of people who disagree with you

Myself included
If I had relied on the public schools system to teach My daughters they would be brain dead zombies like to many of the out of touch teachers in the school system today

I didn't home school.
I opted for a mix of both home school and public school
Luckily for a few teachers My Kids knew more than the teachers did about technology

I wish the Linux 1disk was around then
The kids were using win95/98 and Redhat at home while the schools were still on Apple 2's or were they C's

I am not even a parent, but I find that comment offensive and ignorant... If you are going to make outrageous statements like this, I suggest you do the research first to get clear on just how far off-base you are...

Oh man, you've done it now.
You can say that again!

Don't even get me started on the public school system in my city. Umm... too late... They receive more money per student than any other district in the state, but they get the lowest rating in the state. My taxes are going up yet again next month because they want to waste even more of my money on a completely failed system. My kids have been in private school most of their lives but I still pay taxes for the school system. And no, I can't really afford private school, it's a necessity.

My wife subbed for awhile years ago and my sister in law is a teacher in this school system. They have already announced a multi million dollar deficit for next year and had the audacity to put inserts in the teachers checks asking for donations to help make it up. All the while they refurbished a historical building for the school board that cost tens of millions with gilded ceilings and marble walls, and gave themselves raises and bonuses.

When I first became curious as to how computers work or don't, I signed up for a class at the local community schools. The first night the "teacher" handed out business cards that read "Mr. Know-It-All". I didn't go back.
