Consenus Best Free AV Program?

Since most free AV apps are getting a bad rep (noteabably AVG8), what's the best free route now? Or is it just pay? (I pay for my own, but like offering free and good)

I use Avast,
Antivir is also pretty good.

I have swapped to using Avast, instead of AVG. no problems with it (yet).
