I have my internet running through the onboard internet, but it won't detect it. It was working before I reformatted my computer, but now that I'm back up, it won't work. It's connected through my modem and I'm set up through Comcast.

Sounds like you want to use a dialup modem. It's likely that the drivers have not been installed following the reformat, etc.

Check device manager (run devmgmt.msc) to see if there are any items with yellow punctuation marks beside them. If so you will almost certainly need to get the correct drivers and install them.

More details about your make/model of pc/motherboard would be helpful.

Do I get drivers for the motherboard? or for the network card? like I said though, I'm using the onboard internet. I'm running off a Dell Dimension 3000. I'm pretty sure the motherboard is Dell Dimension 3000 DP/N N6381

Are there many problem devices in Device Manager and in particular have any network cards been installed.

There are 4 problem items listed. Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI Modem, Video Controller. There is a network card in the computer, but I'm not running through it. It was in there before I reformatted. I'm using the onboard

Looks like you need to update/install the drivers for the Ethernet Controller/Network (if connecting via modem/router) or PCI Modem if using DialUp.
