View Full Version : Web site link lockups
Hi, I have 2 computers on cable with a D-Link router. One computer works fine while surfing and the other goes to website home pages with no problem
but about 80% of the time if you click on a link on the page, the internet freezes. I then have to use the task manager to end it. Any thoughts?
Sounds like it could very well be a malware problem...

It is best to download the tools on a known clean machine and store them on some form of portable storage, such as a USB memory stick or to burn them onto a CD (A CR-RW will work just fine). After using the portable storage media (unless it is a burned CD), you need to totally erase it...zero fill. Then transfer them to the problem machine and run them as directed. This is especially helpful in cases of browser redirection or problematic internet connectivity.
First:
How to run a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.[/QUOTE]
Second:
Now run Combofix...follow the instructions, exactly.
Please do the following:
Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop (it needs to be run from the Desktop). Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause the program to stall...
Third:
IN THE ORDER LISTED BELOW
Re-boot the system
Post the Combofix Log
Post the MBAM log
Post a new HJT log
Tell us how the system is running.
Thanks so much, I will do as requested. A question though, I have the trial version of Malwarebytes and I just downloaded the trial version of CyberDefender, MAB finds one problem while CD finds 26! Do you recomend purchasing one over the other to try to fix ?
Trial version of MBAM?
It shouldn't need to be purchased in order to fix anything...where did you download it from?
Just run what is listed and post the asked for logs...

Got a couple of minor web link hangups but better than it was.
I would seriously consider dropping at least one, if not two of the toolbars...the AOL/AIM one and either Google or Yahoo...I have sat and watched the Yahoo and Google toolbars actually bring a system to its knees 'fighting' each other for supremacy (both were set to check for 'default' search status and then to set itself as the default if it wasn't...crippled the machine as they went into an endless loop of switching back and forth).
I'm also wondering if some of the problem isn't a conflict caused by overlapping programs...you've got SpyBot, CyberDefender and BitDefender...all are trying to do some of the same things at the same time...especially CyberDefender and BitDefender. If you can, configure BitDefender for AV scanning and not antiphising/web site protection/etc...
Thanks so much for your help! Its great to have this sort of forum to turn to. I will follow your suggestions.
