View Full Version : Connecting two LINKSYS WRT54GL routers

I have tried to research and did find some useful information. I know it's possible to set the second router as a bridge. My question is, what is the correct way to connect the two routers? I know that the "server" router has to be wired to a broadband internet router. But when you set the other router as a wireless bridge, does it's information just get picked up by the first router or is there something that needs to be plugged into the WAP port of the bridge router?
My intention is to connect a computer to the first router by wire and use the second to bridge components in another room of the house (xbox360, Tivo, possibly a second computer). I think that I am doing the best, and most cost effective, thing using the two routers, but I may be wrong. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Your answer is here (http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4579).

Thanks for the link. So I am to assume that you have to have the two routers wired to each other? Is there no way to have the two routers communicate wirelessly? If not, what should I do to get the solution I am looking for? I am trying to eliminate wires from one end of the house to the other.
I also forgot to mention that I want to connect the xbox, tivo and whatever else by wire to the bridge router.
I can't remember if the stock firmware allows you to set the router up as an access point only...but the third party firmwares should allow that and since you have the L model, installing a Linux based third-party firmware (like OpenWRT) is a snap.

I have been reading reviews on this router and everyone says the same thing. Most are recommending Tomato firmware or WW-DRT. According to them, all I have to do is set one up as a bridge or repeater (after the firmware flash) and fix the necessary items in the setup. Seems to be the cheapest and easiest way to do what I want to do.

One possibility is to use a dLAN via the electricity supply.

Now you've piqued my curiosity, dizzle716. Were you in fact able to set up the network as you wanted without a cable between the two routers? I found a very interesting article here (http://www.glowingtubes.com/p/2nd_LinkSys.htm) that describes the procedure, but the author srtrings an Ethernet cable between the two routers which is precisely what you're trying to avoid. There's no mention of a wireless connection between the two.
Maybe if you do this successfully, you can write a step-by-step guide and put it as a sticky.

There's no mention of a wireless connection between the two.
Maybe have a look at the relevant page on the dd-wrt (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge) site for fairly extensive details.
