There are almost certain to be configurations in which the cleaning goes wrong, perhaps disabling computers so they won't run any more.

This is the same problem that has faced all those tasked with cleaning up the messes made by malware since the first malware came on the scene, in the early '70s. Creeper, basically the first virus was fought with Reaper, another virus, designed to kill Creeper.

Yes, fighting back by 'infecting' systems with a 'disinfector' is a proven technique...but like the article says, will most likely run afoul of the same laws that, if they ever get caught, would put the Storm Worm team behind bars for very long time. Classic Catch-22...
