I have been going crazy on this one.
I have a HP pavillion 1023c with XP Home. I was on the net and both Firefox 3.0. 5 and IE6 were surfing fine. I suddenly lost access with Firefox but could still access with IE and Outlook Express.
I could still get on in windows safe mode with both but not Firefox safe mode.
Then I suddenly lost access with IE as well and finally Outlook Express.
I can ping the net just fine and network diagnostics says everything is fine and the connections in network connections say they are connected at 100mb.
I have tried repairing the connections to no effect. I scanned with everything except combofix as I need to do a backup first. AVG disd fine a variant of Baegle worm and removed it as well as some smaller malware with spybot.
Trend and symantec online scans were clean but of course now I can't even do online scans.
In safe mode however I can get on. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall both the NIC and Firefox to no avail. I turned on the guest account and same same.
!!! Help.
I will run SFC next. PS I tried both netsh commands to reset winsocks etc and also no go.
I really don't want to have to do a system recovery/reinstall as this is a book keeping computer with no good backup.
Ideas?

Post the results of the scans you have run to to now.
If you can ping an IP address, please let know if you can type the ip address into the browser and get to a site....

I tried to type the ip in to the address bar and still a no go. Strange considering the built n diagnostics in the help tools section says everything passes includin g dns. Yet the built in diagnostic in IE says I can't locate server on http, https or ftp!
I finally took a chance and ran combofix late night and it got to step 50 and froze. I was forced to manually restart and now the clock is on military time but IE connected for awile no has stopped agin this am.
I installed PC tools firewall to replace windows firewall and though I see nothing suspicious in the list the ie connection diagnostic still says the firewall is blocking ports 80 443 and 21.
I have run Every suggested tool on majorgeeks includin super anti spyware (which refuses to update), spybot (which can update fine) Malware bites which won't update, MG tools, and an online trend scan found the bagle worm and supposedly removed it.
I am trying to run the bagle fix tool from symantec but get and error message and it freezes up.
It must be bagle?
A boot time scan from Avast found some other minor trojan but noy bagle.
Where to next? I will post some logs later.
Which logs would you like?
Oh and Panda and trend rootkit analysers found nothing.

Is it possible that verizon software is interferring with Firefox? I have enabled the tray app for verizon and now I have pretty good reliable connection with IE.
Could there be a firefox disconnect somehow associated with Verizon that anyone knows of?
Thanx

You are obviosuy infected.
Please post the logs you have.
Run Combofix again. If it fails, run it in safe mode....

Actually it finished the second time in regular mode and didn't find anything. I got on with ie for awile then it dropped again. I started verizon tray app and now I seem to be on fairly steady with IE, However nothing will update and the browser diagnostic app will claim I have no connectivity while I am surfing and the help network diagnostics will claim all is good even when I can no way browse the net with either.
This is really weird. Still in windows safe mode I can connect fine with both browsers.
Should I still run combofix in safe?

If you want help, do as asked. I will post nothing else in this thread until I see some logs.

I agree with classicsoftware unless you want to format and reinstall.
Also which OS are you using because I don't understand the "I could still get on in windows safe mode" which should fail since networking is disabled in Safe MOde. That is as long as get on means get on line. Even Safe Mode with Networking is largely unsuccessful, in my experience, using WinXP.

Well I went to the option to reformat. I meant that I could get on fine with windows in safe mode and networking enabled just fine. But in regular windows mode even with Firefox in safe mode I could not reach the net no how with Firefox and on and off with IE7.
After a reformat reinstall all is perfect again so this was one where time pressed in and I just couldn't find an answer.
I suppose now I will never know but I thank you for the help.
Next time I shall post all logs but these were just all clean.
