Win98 "setup.exe" not responding

After solving several different problems with a pc Im piecing together (wont see floppy,hard drive needed to be reformatted,BIOS needed to be reset to default,etc etc etc) Im to the point now where it boots from a 98 Startup disk, sees the HD (8Gb IDE, FAT32 formatted), and sees the CD-ROM drive (E http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif. The problem *then* is Im at the A: prompt and type in "setup" and nothing happens (returns to A http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif. I try it at the E: prompt and a moment goes by then nothing (returns to E http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif. I give up...after so many different troubles Im at my wit's end. Any ideas why the executeable file wont run and thus install Win98?

I am not sure I understood...........are you typing <install> under A: or E:?
after loading the startup disk (for Win98 I presume) type <E: dir> and you should be able to read at least the content of your Win98 cd rom? if you can read the <dir> in <E:> means that the CD-rom driver works and you should be able to execute the <install> command. Do not execute install under <A:>.

ERRATUM: I am not sure if the Win98 set up command is <setup> or <install>.....anyway check under <E:dir>, is a ".exe" file.

I am able to read the contents of the CD in E: (using E: dir/w for example). The .exe file Im supposed to use to kickoff the installation is simply setup.exe and I'd *assume* that should be run from the E:, not A:, though Ive tried floppy (A), HD (C), and CD-ROM (E).

The correct command is "Setup" @ the (in your case) E prompt...If it wont start the scandisk function immediately, there might be something wrong with the CD itself (try wiping it with a clean moist cloth) and retry. You know the cd is working since you could read contents...

Randy is right, if you can read E: then there is something wrong with the CD-ROM disk, try cleaning it.

Obviously the CD-ROM drive has its necessary driver(s) loaded since I can read the contents of the disk,correct? Any chance there would be a cable issue? It's one of the "faster" cables (blue conn on one end,more contacts than the normal kind).

Your CD is likely to be fine........IT'S THE DISK......CLEAN IT AND TRY AGAIN. If it doesnt work, you either have a bad cd disk or your CD Rom is malfunctioning.......the cables HAVE to be right or you wouldnt have been able to read the contents of drive E ( the cd rom).

A bad CD would truly suck rocks since I just bought the damn thing at a recent show and it was wrapped and sealed along with the license/manual

Put another cd in the unit and try the "setup" or "install" command on it to verify whether it's the cd disk or the CD Rom unit.
