According to this place (http://http://www.knowplace.org/registry.html), scanreg.exe doesn't come with 95, but if you have access to a 98 disk you can grab the file and use it with 95.

Nope, 95 didn't have scanreg. I'm not sure it will work with 95 either, maybe, but never heard of it being done.

The way I've always had to replace the registry in 95 is by renaming the older backups made when installing programs.

First you have to find out what files are available. The original registry files are system.dat and user.dat The backups will be something like system.abc and user.abc To find out which ones are available you can either search through tons of files, or use wildcards. The files are in c:\windows. From C:\windows:
dir system.* will list only the files with system as the filename, but with any extension. Same for the user files. dir user.*

From the A:\> prompt the command dir c:\windows\system.* will do the same thing.

Once you find out what's available, you pick two that have the same extension and date, and rename them:

ren system.dat system.abc will rename the existing file. Let's say the replacement is system.xyz:

ren system.xyz system.dat will rename that one and the computer will then see it as system.dat The same for the user.ext files: ren user.xyz user.dat

From the A:\> prompt:

ren c:\windows\system.xyz system.dat

The main thing you have to watch for is that both have the same extension and date before renaming them.

By the way, the command you posted must have a space in it, denoted here by an underscore ( _ ):

scanreg_/restore Without the space DOS will give you a syntax error, or a "bad command or filename" error. Same for the commands posted above, but I didn't use the underscore.

OK, I'll correct myself before someone does it for me. I didn't read the page Stone posted before posting because it doesn't work! But I tried again and removed the extra http:// and it worked fine. It seems scanreg will work with win85, I just wasn't aware of it.

To make the above link work...oh never mind, here it is:
