Microsoft announced layoffs due to the economy and their ongoing prospects. They are laying off 1400 now and layoffs will continue until 5000 are gone, and then hire about 2000 new employees for high growth divisions.
Why?
Vista Premium variants do not run well on netbook PCs, and netbooks are the fastest growing PC category right now. MS makes less $$ per OEM license if XP Home is shipped compared to Vista, and Windows 7 will not be released until fiscal year 2010. Microsoft is also competing against Linux on netbooks as well which makes those even cheaper for the OEMs to sell.
