Just before the Win '98 screen I get an error
message that reads:file missing or corrupted:
C:\CDexpert\ACTCD.sys

and below that.........
error in config.sys file on line 2
C:\>rem by windows setup C:\windows\command\
mscdex.exe /d:mscd001
Is there a way to fix these errors without
resorting to fdisk?

The former sounds like a registry entry for a program that doesn't exist. Some of these other guys can help you figure out how to fix that. Umm the other part sounds like a cdrom driver issue. Im not entirely sure how to fix that...

Boot to a win98 Start Up disk and type edit config.sys and write down, or save to a floppy, the contents. Don't change anything, and post it here. Let's see what it looks like, might be as simple as reloading CD ROM drivers.

Still at the A:\> prompt type scanreg /fix and let scanreg repair the registry. If that doesn't work, reboot and try again, and use this command: scanreg /restore and restore the registry using a copy dated before the problem started. Remember the spaces in the commands, they have to be there.

device=flashpt.sys
device=btcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
device=aspi2dos.sys
device=aspi8dos.sys
device=aspi4dos.sys
device=aspi8u2.sys
device=aspicd.sys /D:mscd001

That's the config.sys file from the CD directory of a win98 start up disk. You need to change to the root directory of the C drive and copy that config.sys file. The one you posted has all the instructions for your start up disk to find a CD ROM at boot.

Paleo Pete, I went to C:\>edit config.sys
this was listed:
device=C:\CDexpert\actcd.sys /d:mscd001
Read only file,haven't figured out how to
change file to modify yet.

That should be two lines, one referring to C:\DOS\MSCDEX also. The config.sys file should also have the archive attribute set, not read only. I'm not too sure about my knowledge concerning resetting attributes, I'll post a couple of links and see if you can find good instructions.

Hope those can help a bit.
