I want to boot from the master or slave at my choice will RANISH or another
program do this with minimum difficulty.
Any help appreciated.

I've never heard of RANISH, but it sounds like you need a boot manager program of some sort. There's one included in Partition Magic, or you can use something like System Commander.

I don't know of any partition software that will do what you want. My hardware solution was to install toggle switches, and using some two-wire connector assemblies from old PC cases, connected them in place of the MA and SL jumpers on the hard drives. The BIOS is set to Auto-detect, so I just flip to the drive I want before turning on the computer.
There is a boot switch named Trios (handles three drives), but it is about $80 and requires a 5.25 bay. The other drives are disconnected when a boot drive is selected. With my setup, both are available; they just swap being C: and D:.

(Not a reliable service yet)
Some drives, like Maxtor, only need the Master to be set, so only one wire pair might be needed.
