DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL!!!!

Oh wait, wrong cliche...anyway, why do you want to remove everything from the drive? Are you positive it's absolutely necessary? Many times if you're having problems, it can be fixed without a format/reinstall being necessary, and you can run across plenty unexpected surprises if you format a drive.

To delete files, the commands are:
del <filename.ext> will delete the specific file.
del *.* will delete everything in the current directory.
deltree <directoryname> will delete a directory and all files and subfolders inside it.
format x: substituting the drive's letter for x will erase everything on the drive.
format x: /s will do the same, and transfer the system files, making the drive bootable. You have to be using a bootdisk for this command.

Be very careful using the deltree and format commands! Double check the command line and make sure you know exactly what you are deleting, and that you really WANT it deleted...

Thanks for the info and the links. The reason I am thinking this is the best route is that each time my sister turns on her computer it loses more stuff ie the d: drive the a: drive sound etc.

It crashed 6 months ago and she took it in to a place, they reloaded everything but, it is now losing it one drive at a time. Any other ideas would be welcomed http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

thanks Cat><

Run a good virus scanner and QUICK! Make sure the DAT files are current. And remember that no virus scanner in existence can rout out all known virii, and plenty are out there that are unknown.

Could be simply corrupted registry or .ini files though.

Could also be a dying CMOS battry losing information. Does it also lose or reset the time?

If you dont have an up to date Virus Scanner and have access to the web you can try this link ...
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp

Its from Trend (They are VERY good). Its an online Virus scanner guaranteed to be 100% up to date and above all it is free. Takes about 10mins to initialise first time round .. often looks like its hung but if you set it away and leave it you will get a virus scanner screen very similar to PC-illin..... it does the BIZ.

I used it at work to clean the VBS.Loveletter within 4 hours of catching it on the day it came out. And before the update CD's came to us the next day.
