This topic is covered extensively in almost every Linux book and documentation. I suggest reading whatever documentation that comes with the version of Linux you choose.

There also determines the answer. Some versions of Linux can boot from CD, others need boot and root disks.

I suggest either downloading a distrubition of Linux from Linuxberg.com (http://www.linuxberg.com) or going and getting a book or magazine about linux that has a CD accompanying it.

I would and did get the book myself. Sams Linux Unleashed is great or if you want, their Slackware Unleashed is good.

Either choice - given you dont use the CD rom method - you will then need to make the root and boot disks using rawrite(comes with distribution) to write the files to the disks. Usually you will use bare.1 and color.gz to make the two disks.

These two disks are used to boot to a linux shell and setup your linux partition and directories.

I strongly urge you to take your time and read about Linux before you attempt to install it. You will be much more comfortable with the install and in doing so will also give you a better idea of what you want to install.

If you just cant wait to get started and insist on diving into it at least glance over the Installation HowTo (http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Installation-HOWTO.html).

Hope this helped some. If you are still confused please respond with a more detailed description of what your delima is.(ex. Windows is already on a partition that consumes the entire harddrive and i need to make space fomr linux)
