Further to my question about background programs, how do I identify what background programs do which task, ie which one runs my virus scan, and which ones can be safely removed. I apologise for my stupidity in this matter. I run Windows 95 is Windows 98 a better option

In win 98 run msconfig, (type msconfig in the run box) and click the start up tab. The path to the application will be shown in the line beside the box.

[Ctrl] [Alt] [Del] opens the task manager, with those spiffy program names you can never decipher. I have no idea how to tell what they are, I still haven't figured a couple out...

Soon as I come up with all the answers...they change the questions!!

To get some clue what the running .exe's are, search for them on your harddrive. The name of the folder where they reside is a clue, and there may also be a readme.txt in the same folder that provides updated information about the program (and it's name!)

There is a free Windows Startup Editor (http://esn.softseek.com/Utilities/Taskbar_Start_Menu_and_Explorer_Enhancements/Startup_and_Shutdown_Managers/Review_45385_index.shtml) that you can try.

Windows 98SE is my favorite operating system now. I have gotten Windows ME to run, but it has some bugs that need to be worked out.

Prof,

Explorer and Systray are the two programs that must be left running. I included the link to the Windows Startup Editor because Windows 95 does not have Msconfig.
