If your headphones work then your speakers should work.make sure your speakers are plugged in,instead of your headphones

The headphone socket is actually on the front of the cd.The speaker socket is on the back of the machine. It is connected to the right socket as I have sound from everything else

Hi Crispy,
Whoever told you that the driver needs to be installed is right. Most CD-ROMS will play through the headphone jack all by themselves, without any drivers loaded. (I think)
Do you have a driver disk that came with the soundcard? If so, run the install.exe or setup.exe file found on the disk.
When you say that you have sound, do you mean you have operating system sounds coming from the speakers, or the internal speaker?
If you do not have a driver disk, boot the computer in Safe Mode. You can usually do this by pressing the F8 or Del key just after the memory check or thereabouts. Then go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager. See if you have any yellow exclamation points by the listing for your soundcard. If you do see some yellow flags and you have a line item that represents your soundcard, highlight that line and delete it. Reboot and Windows will install a universal driver for your soundcard.
Ok, so that will cover your soundcard. Now, about the CD-ROM. If you do not have a driver disk for that, boot in Safe Mode and then go to Device Manager as suggested above. Look for yellow flags (they mean something is wrong) by the listing for your CD-ROM. Again, as above, highlight the line that represents your CD-ROM and delete it. Reboot and universal drivers should be loaded and installed.
Let's see. I hope I didn't forget anything. Maybe some other guys will have a few tips that I either missed or am unaware of. Try the above and let us know what happens.
Cheers,

Me again. Just thought of something else. You don't mention whether you had the case open and was messing around inside the computer.
If you were, recheck the audio cable going from the back of the CD-ROM to the soundcard. It's a small cable, consisting of maybe two or three small wires with end connectors that about one-half inch wide. Make sure the connections on both the CD-ROM and the soundcard are secure.
Good luck.

Hey
Yeah if you get plain audio and hear CDs from the headphone jack then you
definately dont have the MPC cable attached to the ROM and SoundCard. Laters...

Hi All
Guess what I have managed to get sound, But don't ask me how I did it.
I downloaded the driver from the net but could not install it. It was a winzip file which I transferred into a folder. I deleted all the drivers in the sound, game etc controllers and then when trying to reinstall, the prompt led me to windows 98. Instead of clicking no (highlighted) i clicked yes and it installed the microsoft drivers. If you can tell me how to install the correct drivers from the winzip file i would appreciate it or should i just leave things as they are. Many thanks for all your help over the past couple of days.
Merry Christmas

Hey Crispy,
Ok, so it WAS a driver problem. You could go for quite some time using the Windows supplied driver, but if possible, it's usually a good idea to use the latest driver from the manufacturer of the specific component.
You downloaded a zipped file. In order to unzip it, you will need an unzipper. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif You can download a free version of WinZip at www.winzip.com. (http://www.winzip.com.) Download and install the WinZip software and then start the WinZip wizard program. It will automatically find the zip file that you downloaded previously. Choose to unzip the file and pay attention to which folder WinZip puts the unzipped files in.
Then, go to Device Manager, highlight your soundcard and choose Properties then Driver. Click on Update Driver. When asked for the source, browse to the folder that you unzipped the soundcard files to and choose that folder as the source to update the driver from.
Try doing the above, and if you run into problems, post back and tell us exactly where you're at in the process. One of us should be able to help.
Good Luck, and a Merry Christmas to you.

I did everything that you said in your message, However when I clicked on update driver and went to the source where I had saved the program in it would not let me use it as an option therefore I had to use the one that windows kept prompting me on and the only reason I could do this was because there was a message saying that this was not a suitable driver did i want to use it YES/NO windows highlighted no and i just clicked yes.
I know the problem still exists as such and I will now try to use the correct driver that I have saved. The readme file with the driver is simple enough but as i said when I try to open it so as to highlght the one i want it is not an option. In one of the boxes it reffered to inf file, Does that mean anything to you?
Speak to you later

After unzipping the driver file, was there an EXE file? It may be that there is an EXE which installs the driver.
A Windows INF is a file that defines and lists information that the system-level class installers will use.

Hi Crispy,
Congrats on getting as far as you did. I kinda figured you would get hung up where you did, because I was unsure as to what all the zipped file contained, but I thought it was worth a shot anyway.
Reid is right about the .exe file. Go to the folder where you unzipped the file. Look for a file with the .exe extension. Double click that and it may very well install the driver itself.
Try that. If still no go, get back to us and post a list of the files and their extensions that were unzipped from that zip file you downloaded.
Good Luck,

Howdy
I would strongly suggest reading any Readme files in the archive first. Make sure those are the proper drivers. If they are the proper drivers then simply force windows to use them. Choose "Display a list of all drivers" and choose have disk and select the path to where you unziped them. Or like also suggested it may require an executable to install them. I feel like i should go back and re-read some posts...this was already said wasnt it? Oh well. Laters...

I didn't see anything unusual with the file list that you sent to me, but here is something to try; just did some searching and found this link:
http://www.cps-infotec.com.br/som/Crystal_4235.zip
It was hard to find this Windows driver, most of the search hits were for OS/2.
It has INF files, so you might try running the uninstall program from the other drivers, then try updating your sound card with this new one through the Device Manager.
