On my Pentium III, Win 98 PC I have added a FAT 16 partition within the first 8 GB of disk space to add DOS 6.2 and a couple of old but desirable programs.

When I run setup.exe on Disk 1 of the DOS 6.21 disk set, the system starts and then asks me to insert Disk 1.
Of course that disk is already there. but this endless loop instruction always comes up.

I have tried installing DOS6.2 from the A:\ drive, from INSTALL/DELETE in Win 98 Settings, Control Panel, from Windows RUN A:setup.exe and every other device I could think of.
The result is always the same in that the system asks me to insert Disk 1, which is already there. Taking it out and reinserting it gives the same result.

Question: How can one install DOS6.2 into a FAT16 partition meant for this OS?
The same endless loop instruction to insert the disk that is already there comes up.

TIA for any help.

For win3.x installations you have to open autoexec.bat or config.sys and rem out the line referring to smartdrive. That might do it. Otherwise, I don't know...

I have 'installed' dos simply by copying the files to the desired location.
